    Woke to a huge explosion last night that set off alarms all over the area. Deep, loud, high velocity. It sounded like a bomb. Not a backfire. I had immediate visions of rockets.

    Turns out some kids made an ‘IED’ and set it off. And blew a hole in a wall somewhere nearby.

    UPDATE (Note that the Roshen store is across the street from my apartment)

    KIEV, May 29. An explosion has occurred in the Roshen store in Kiev’s Obolon district, no one was injured, Kiev police chief Alexander Tereschuk said. He contradicted the information received earlier that the shop had been shelled with a grenade launcher.

    “According to our investigation, this can be regarded as hooliganism. There was a powder charge, but there are no debris, so it must have been a self-made explosive device. I refute the information about the store being shelled with a grenade launcher,” he told Ukraine’s public television.

    Tereschuk noted that a terrorist attack was ruled out.

    The law enforcement officials said the explosion had taken place on Thursday at about 23:00 local time. No one was injured as a result of the incident.

    OK…. I give in. I want my Porsche. I want open highways. I want to feel spring. I want to see the equinox from a beach. I want to go to a concert. I want service from a waiter who understands grace. I want my Italian leather couch and chair, and my dutch antiques, and my german china.

    I am even willing to tolerate the painfully inane ignorance of americans, and the sight of the disintegration of western civilization – at least for a week or two.

    Sigh.

    Participating in one of Ayelam’s threads with a lot of people from Ghana, and learning more than I can from any number of books, papers and journals. Sort of like debating online with people from different cultures. Amazing. It is so hard NOT to be clueless. But what’s interesting is the quality of their conversation. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something is very ‘right’ about it. Lacking knowledge maybe but remarkably free of ‘ancestral error’. Yes….. that’s it. That’s what it is. Interesting..

Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).     As my friends list has expanded beyond the libertarians and into the conservatives, it’s been interesting to observe how frequently I am misunderstood, but how less ideological conservatives are, and how better informed in general, if not as informed about economics. Libertarians understand and counter with fallacies endemic to libertinism. Conservatives respond without fallacy, but presume the wrong argument.

    There is something interesting to be learned there if I think about it a bit.

    I need to understand it.

    My brave mother, with three kids, very little income, and a sadistic drunkard of a husband, always made sure she had a ‘run bag’ of money to get away with.

    Thankfully, he actually adored her, and he worked hard as hell as an outlet for his frustration. But he never succeeded his father’s approval, in her approval, or ours. His behavior was largely the result of failing to get anyone’s approval. Her disapproval was largely the result of his alcoholism. Ours was simply terror.

    I contemplated killing him for years, usually trying to fall asleep at night while he verbally terrorized my mother – starting at I think 11 or 12. More than a few times I stood there watching him sleep with a hunting knife in my 70-pound hands.

    I couldn’t give a thimble for his life. I was happy to bear the consequences, and was sure, naively, that I would be vindicated. But I thought my mother would never forgive me, and I was worried she would be even worse off because of it.

    I have extraordinary patience under hardship really. And I will work a very long time for my objectives. But what drives me relentlessly in pursuit of freedom it is that experience: we can never tolerate subjugation, because every man is corruptible.

    The only rule is rule by all, and therefore rule by none: the rule of law, property rights, and property en toto: the total suppression of parasitism upon others.

    Kill the evil. Punish the wicked. Advance the productive. Protect the helpless.

    A Plan. A Weapon. Time. Determination. Perseverance. Execution.

    Civilization is very fragile at the moment.
