    THE ILLUSION OF PRODUCTION

One psychological trick of moral deception that left leaning economists rely upon is the implication that the term “production” is merely a process of execution.

This process of execution is contrasted with the process of “research and development”, with the implication that there is no risk to production and high risk in research and development.

Furthermore, that the economy consist entirely of processes of production, and that research and development is largely unnecessary and a luxury of those few who find their entertainment in it.

As such, a process of production is a form of exploitation of labor, and the process of research and development is an unnecessary device for the purpose of signaling status.

But this is all an illusion. An error at best, and a deception at worst.

All production in a competitive market at all times under all circumstances is an act of “research and development” at high risk.

Two private sector factors reduce that risk: superior knowledge of consumer wants, and superior knowledge of how to service them, more cheaply than someone else.

Two factors further reduce that risk: grant of privilege by the state that conveys a limited monopoly. And access to credit markets at lower rates.

The human bias in favor of the illusion of competence pervades the left and is its source of confidence. This bias is further reinforced by the false consensus bias, which confirms their illusion of competence.

Their participation in a discipline in which they hold the unique academic privilege of not being held accountable for their errors further reinforces both the false consensus and illusion if competence biases.

All economic action is risk taking.

The state grants privileges in the form of limited monopoly powers to certain industries in order to increase employment and taxes. It creates expansive credit to empower both industry and consumer to take risks.

If production were execution rather than risk taking, then credit and privilege would not be necessary.

But production is an illusion. The market consists entirely of research and development.

And the absurdly high turnover in organizations is but one proof of it.

A QUESTION FOR THE LEFT: IF IT MEANT THAT IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE A FAR MORE MATERIALLY EQUAL SOCIETY, PERHAPS THE MOST MATERIALLY EQUAL IN THE WORLD, WOULD YOU THEN CEASE DENIAL OF INEQUALITY OF ABILITY, INEQUALITY OF RACES, AND THE IRRECONCILABILITY OF GENDER PREFERENCES?

I think you would. And you should. Because that is what it will take for you to have a heterogeneous society that includes redistribution.

MAJORITY RULE IS AN ARTIFACT OF PRODUCTIVE SCARCITY

The only reason to have majority rule is because there is so little excess productive capacity. If we have such high productive capacity, why does a majority need to agree upon the use of it?

A government of exchanges rather than takings: Propertarianism.

( Think about that one a bit. 🙂

There are no political problems. There are no pollution problems. There are no resource problems. The only problem is the unregulated breeding of the lower classes.

    BUYING ISOLATION

It’s very visible. Americans buy spatial freedom as their first priority. Spatial freedom, along with the destruction of marriage, are why household incomes are not keeping pace in the lower classes.

With spatial freedom you no longer have to compromise with others over the mundane things.

But then your self perceived signals are all contrived. And others don’t reinforce them. And we feel alone and isolated. And contentious.

Here the majority don’t have that kind of freedom. And so the signals are less misleading.

And they are more civil because of it. And since relationships are cheap entertainment. And these people are relatively poor – at least for white people – they interact with one another.

It’s not consumerism that’s the social problem. It’s the epistemically problem of isolation and a failure for our signals to endure the test of exposure to others. 😉

    UNBELIEVABLE DEV COST

You know, in Seattle, assuming I could get developers this good to work on this product, the burdened cost would be something on the order of 100 an hour. Here it’s 25.

    BUDGET. SIGH.

Ok. Now that we have the scope done, and the plumbing done. I have to do a budget. Which means a project plan, estimates and comprises. No

    one likes compromises.

The team is quite good. Exceptional. But it will be work keeping their confidence. The scope of work is not something they are comfortable with.

They want to simplify things for themselves not the user. And they seem afraid of some of the complex features because multi site solutions are unfamiliar to them.

So it is cheaper to develop software here. And the talent is exceptional. Especially per dollar. But you have to work hard to incrementally build their confidence.

This isn’t Seattle or SF. The talent doesn’t have poduct experience. And they are timid. And like all of us, when exposed to the unfamiliar they resort to the familiar.

    I love this business.

    I love engineers.

    I LOVE STARTUP MODE

Seriously. Why does anyone do anything other than start a business? 🙂 Sure. It’s manic. It’s chaos. The future is uncertain. It’s terribly risky. But it’s also under your control. It is what you make it.

I think this is actually business number nine, not number eight for me. I forgot one. The biggest mistake I made in the last decade (aside from divorcing my amazing wife) was in not leaving my last company when I first resigned in 2009. I could have done another business by now, and gotten it to maturity. And I would have been much happier in startup mode, than I was arguing with an investor who cost us half our revenues.

Well, that said. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to work with friends and this amazing talent that I’ve been lucky enough to find.

Enough celebration. Time for sleep. It was a long day. (Although I managed to get to the bakery for croissants this afternoon!)

    Cheers

MORE ON LIBERTARIAN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT: the attention economy

Attention is a resource just like time and money. People calculate what they devote their attention to. People seek to minimize the attention and calculation that they devote to the interests of others.

Although women, because of greater Oxytocin levels, are more so, they also tend to err in favor of consensus while men because of testisterone err on competitive innovation.

The problem then is in creating a social environment in the work place that maintains the focus of their attention on calculating excellences instead of efficiencies by creating incentives that are social rather than remunerative.

If I could distill the libertarian organizational strategy to one lesson I think this would be it.

Efficiency in human organizations is a dirty word. :).
