Marx advocated capitalism as a necessary prerequisite to socialism because it would destroy national solidarity as a means of setting the stage for international working class solidarity. As far back as Bakunin, you see him arguing that “communism” would consist of an avowedly marxist elite deciding they like capitalism after all and keeping the money for themselves.

I think it’s not obvious that the Oxford model of colleges was far closer to the guild model than today’s universities are – which are far closer to the church model.

I think it’s interesting that our ancestors whose civilization depended on blacksmith, bronze, horse, wheel, used giants, titans, and gods that lived on mountains, and the sun. And the semitics, whose civilization of myths about the stars, and the chinese pantheon who found heaven as a sort of parallel, all chose different means of representing what we think of as gods, with western gods the most material, then eastern, then semitic.

MOTIVATIONS FOR COLONIALIZATION

If we disambiguate the mediterranean from the northern Atlantic worlds we will find different, though related motivations for colonization.
For the Iberian peninsula it was a matter of national survival.
As the Atlantic opened up to the world the Netherlands, followed by England set up global trade networks (inspired by previous Portuguese and Spanish success) to build up their national wealth so as to resist Catholic domination (Netherlands eventually split) made possible by Spanish gold and silver from the colonies.
Resisting Catholic domination required rapid expansion of mercantilist trade (raw material inputs are imported, high value added outputs are exported) making bases in North America ideal.

THE MIND OF TRUMP
–“Why is trump being nice to sanders and congratulating him on his win”–
Because (a) he wants sanders to be his opponent, and (b) he thinks Clinton stole the last election cycle from Sanders, and (c) he appreciates what it is like to have the party machinery work against you.
I am pretty sure Trump thinks that Sanders is honest but a bit nuts or wrong. And Trump just cares that the man is honest. What he doesn’t like about the other candidates is that they aren’t honest.
Take trump’s manipulation of the press for what it is – disrespectful reciprocity: giving what you’re getting, but to his followers he’s honest and moral and working in their interests against the deep state.
Bernie’s followers think the same thing.
