PROCRASTINATION
It’s 1PM, and for the past four hours I have managed to avoid writing the section of my chapter on the evolution of conservative thought from Darwin to the war. I mean, the whole world really got confused there for a while. Darwin and Marx really threw the Aristocratic world into a spin. The Louisiana purchase pretty much put an end to the small state and the constitution. Feminism, the economic fight between the north and south over the west, and the anti-slavery movement did the rest. The depressions of the 1870’s were almost as impactful to european thought as was the 30 Years War. Americans were so busy making money that they thought their temporary utopia was a permanent force of nature. (Post-Microsoft Seattle is going through that phase right now.) So, I’m doing a really good job of avoiding writing. Blogging is such a convenient distraction. :\

HAPPINESS
Having seen a couple of plays, walked the entire theater and shopping district, and cohabited with my felling north easterners for a few days, I’m decidedly relaxed and happy. And that in itself is remarkable.
Despite having an inner clock that’s naturally happy I haven’t felt so in a very long time – due to illness, undiagnosed allergies, extraordinary responsibilities, divorce, and the resulting stresses from each – any one of which is enough to shorten one’s life.
Unfortunately, the puritan ethic in both my genes, memory, class and culture, forbids me from even acknowledging happiness, and the iconically robed ascetic angel of consience on my shoulder warns me to ignore it and soldier onward.
So I hope I don’t tempt the vengeance of puritan christian fate, or the humor of the pagan gods of my ancestors by being thankful for a bit of happiness.
Perhaps I’ll leave a votive offering in the park so that they forgive my indulgence. 🙂

NERD STATUS: I’ve written like 10k words today, in six hours, on tangerines, peanut butter cookies, and a cup of coffee.
(Thank you God for the time and freedom to write. There is no greater luxury I could ask for.) 🙂

Everything I own is in storage.
And my work and my book have a chance to see the light of day.
Merry Christmas!!

2800 mikes in 62 hours with 9 hours of sleep on one egg breakfast and one steak dinner, six granola bars, three donuts and an unknown amount of coffee. A trivial amount of gasoline. (Charles doesn’t weigh much).
Church is at 11 tomorrow at the cathedral.
Amanda made coffee cake!
(thank you sweetie )
