I had a close friend whose family was more Christian and pacifist than my martial puritan and catholic one. And his father showed up a number of times, because I’d gotten out of hand, despite that we did nothing different than wrestling or scuffling than any other of my friends.

Was life a little more ‘brutal’ in the 1960’s, in rural America? Well sure. But there was something brutally honest about it, and something brutally true about it. And we never worried about locking our doors, or the myriad of neurotic visions the infantilize obsess over.
