AFAIK we have no other way of measuring (g) other than relative to the distribution, and then tracking changes in the distribution by rotating questions (subtests) in and out of the portfolio of questions.

IQ is a measure by which we attempt to capture the fact that (g) scales all facets of demonstrated intelligence, particularly verbal, spatial,fluid, and working memory, even though each of us varies in them. IQ tries to (relatively) measure (g).
