Competition between visual fields exaggerates the issue, since these fields are mixed between the thalamus and the primary visual cortex. In other words, it makes sense, but we wouldn’t necessarily predict that effect.

Features are constructed primarily from edges, fragments (sets of edges) and textures, and only color last.
So yeah, thats the beauty of the neocortex: feature construction with limited information.
