When a man produces a prepared speech he speaks to the audience he assumes exists, answering questions he assumes they possess.
When a man answers questions he speaks to the audience that exists answering questions that exist.
When a man speaks, he speaks to himself, answering his own questions, not those of an audience.
I prefer to have a subject, and then interview the audience, and then tailor the conversation to suit the audience.
This requires you are highly conversant in your subject.
But it is the only time I ever feel comfortable with an audience.
