GATES’ GO TO CHURCH. I GO TO CHURCH TOO. I TALK TO GOD. (PRETTY OFTEN REALLY) No
http://www.christianpost.com/news/bill-gates-reveals-family-goes-to-catholic-church-it-makes-sense-to-believe-in-god-116166/THE GATES’ GO TO CHURCH. I GO TO CHURCH TOO. I TALK TO GOD. (PRETTY OFTEN REALLY)
Now, my reasons for going to church, for talking to god are fairly intellectual, and not in the least superstitious or supernatural. But then that is based upon one’s ability to think in increasing degrees of abstraction from the more simplistic and anthropomorphic. I might prefer that ‘church’ preached the “Matter of Greece, France, Germany, and England” as myths, and I might prefer that the ‘church school’ taught physical fitness, military and political strategy, morality and the law, the use of money, and economics’. But I accept the simple fact that a polity must experience running, dancing, chanting, singing, reciting, together to help us ‘bond’ by reminding us of our origins as a pac; of surrendering our will to the group – which is the source of the feeling of ‘spirituality’, and the ultimate sense of safety that we can experience.

(FACK) WE ANTHROPOMORPHIZED TRUTH FOR THE SAME REASON WE ANTHROPOMORPHIZED GODS.

Sigh. Argumentation Ethics did teach me something. The vast cost of what we surrender when we enter into debate.

ALL RELIGIONS NEED A BOOK
All religions need a ‘book’. I have been working under that premise for over a decade. Once you have a book, philosophy doesn’t float. You have an authoritarian position to refer to. Debate over that position creates invention in the minds of those who are interested.
If the book is very good, then the results are self organizing. If you have a book and advocates, then you have political means. If you have a book, advocates and members, then you political power. If you have political power you can institute your ideas. If your book morally condones violence in the pursuit of your ideas, you have an eternal irrevocable advantage independent of current circumstance.
The problem for the west is that we have never had a book. Plato failed. The monarchs ruled by tradition. The church spoke in allegory. Smith Hume and Jefferson wrote advice not rules, and they created the catastrophic error that the near universal aristocratization of the English could have the same breadth of application as the doctrine of the church.

This article seems to track to the evolution of events in the Old Testament: a small society of up to 70 people faces depredations until, through an extended series of skirmishes, it becomes a kingdom.

No matter what color you are, language you speak, the traditions you practice, or gods you worship – you must love yourself, your language, your traditions, and your gods.
But if you must leave your people to live amongst others, the question you must ask yourself is what is wrong with your people, your language, your traditions, or your gods that you should desire to live amongst those whose language, traditions and gods are different?
The only measure of a people, its language, its traditions, its gods, is the economic status that they live under. Reason functions largely as a means to lie to ourselves. The only scientific test of a culture is the economic status of its members.

Nicolás Gómez Dávila
Skye turned me onto Davila today. After reading a bit of his work it’s pretty clear that he’s against modernity and in favor of mysticism. But I did managed to pull a few gems together:
–“Liberty is not an end, but a means. Whoever mistakes it for an end does not know what to do once he attains it.”–
–“Perfection is the point where what we can do and what we want to do coincide with what we ought to do”–
–“Violence is not necessary to destroy a civilization. Each civilization dies from indifference toward the unique values which created it.”–
–“Modern man does not love, but seeks refuge in love; does not hope, but seeks refuge in hope; does not believe, but seeks refuge in a dogma.”–
—“Civilization is a poorly fortified encampment in the midst of rebellious tribes.”—
–“Love of the people is an aristocratic calling. The democrat only loves the people at election time.”–

The Universalist State As A Religion
[L]ets just keep in mind that Universalist Secular Democratic Socialist Humanism, is a religion too OK? And so is postmodernism. There is precious little difference between the church and the university liberal arts department except the anthropomorphized ‘we’ of a god has been replaced with the corporate ‘we’ of the state. In practice there is zero difference between them. Universalism whether under the edict of a mythical god, or the edict of a corporate state is equally unscientific. The W.E.I.R.D. culture is unique. And it has to be. Because it’s suicidal. (WEIRD: Western, Educated, Indusrial, Rich, Democratic)
