When you buy a company the primary asset is it’s network effect (user-customer base). So by buying twitter (a) he takes an enemy out of the market AND (b) gains control over the enemy’s market, and produces a cash flow, saving himself maybe five to ten years of market competition. So now he has the platform to create X (the universal app). He just needs to stay above break even long enough to do it.
