I make enough fun of the french pseudo intellectual academy already. 😉 You want me to do even more?

The french were catholic and killed the protestants and the aristocracy, but they maintained the femininity and authoritarianism of the church, producing a feminine philosophy to replace theology – obedience.

The Germans were protestant(mostly) and restored the masculinity and independence of the european tradition – while trying to produce a rational philosophy to replace theology.

Elluls is just trying to justify the unification of the disciplines preserving theology and philosophy in public matters, (shoulds) while the anglo model is to eliminate bads and leave open the opportunity to discover possible goods.

The difference? The British who invented the modern state, empiricism, and science were a more evolved and higher trust people with the most modern government and the least corruption – especially compared to France. So the British favored liberty, while the french claimed liberty but they maintained authority. This is most evident in the difference between the middle eastern authoritarianism of the napoleonic code, and the european libertarianism of the germanic common law.

Good question Peter. Yes, friction increased as it moved east for the same reason all other development slowed as we move east: development is a response to trade and the institutions that result from trade, and geography is a resistor to trade.

    Agreed.
The non-obvious fact is the primacy of law in both jewish and european civilizations – which explains the development of both intellectual traditions vs the rest of the world – and why the two produce most intellectual innovation. That said, the martial and political origin of european and the familial and social origin of the jewish remains an emphasis in both sets of laws. Europeans attempted to synthesize both ambitions by germanicizing christianity. By the time we get to Aquinas that’s soidified in natural law. But it has taken centuries to complete that project. And even then, it’s a less comforting framework than one in which we are taken care of by the divine, rather than alone in a vast hostile universe requiring us to ascend into the divine on our own. Man may be too fragile for that mission. 😉 So the experiment in discovery of what is possible given human frailty continues. 😉 Meanwhile I preserve my faith. I do not need to justify it. Only practice it. 🙂
So fundamentally, I agree with you. 😉

You’e a moral man. 😉 But personal experience vs statistical evidence. Plus your cultural background is as exceptional in production of the family and society as mine is in the production of the military and government. The hard problem is doing both excellently – and modernity isnt helping. 😉 Hence the nasty statistics and what to do about them. 😉 Destruction of the family is catastrophic and getting worse. And its producing harm to all other domains of cooperation. Even worse in the states.

The USA is maintaining christianity for intersting and unique reasons – largely the invention of american evangelical preachers. However, the evidence is pretty clear that religious participation is crashing and will be under a quarter of the population within a generation.

I’m stating the abrahamic religions are the worst invention in the history of man, and that ‘curing’ that problem is *the greatest problem facing humanity*.
Now I’m saying this for scientific and technical reasons so it’s not just an opinion.
The semitic cults weaponized the feminine.
Islam simply used the masculine to impose the feminine.
What is the feminine: magical thinking, evasion of responsibility, and evasion of reality, by the social construction of illusion to escape the pressure ov evolutionary adaptation, and doing so by the destruction of all male responsibility, realism, innovation, adaptation, and evolution of cooperation at larger and larger scales.

(The europeans could have easily repeated the conquest of the middle east by the greeks and romans with the crusades but had no reason; they did with the age of sail and ending of overland trade; they did so with WW1, and could do so today with ease. The problem is that without need for flood river agriculture, or the silk road, or oil there is no value to the middle east, and low iq, low trust people are incompatible with eastern and western civilizations.
The only reason for the expansion of islam by force was the exhaustion of the two indo european civs of europe and persia bt fighting each other. Every ethicity that conquered under islam was subsequently defeated by the nest wave of barbarians the most recent the Turkics. Even the golden age was persian, and that was reversed by 1000 by conversion to fundamentalism.
Despite recovering from the indo european conquest of the world resulting in the bronze age collapse after 1200bc every civ other than the west managed to stagnate or decline by 800ad having exhausted the agrarian revolution. Yet if not for overextension, plague and wars of migration, ther is no reason why rome didnt invent the industrial revolution before 800ad. They had the technologies. But without the english problem of needing pumps to drain mines
Explaining why the west recovered from semitic superstition and others didnt, and why every other civ stagnated before and after the brone age collapse, is the answer to social science: It only matters who innovates adapts fastest. Islam justifies and manufactures ignorance. and worse, irresponsibility for self regulation, and especially evasion of truth before face.)
