    Libertarians still live under the delusion that the values of civility and non-combativeness are inherent to man.

    The reality is Western man is the only domesticated animal and even amongst our numbers there are jackals everywhere. And despite our domestication, the market for violence did not cease to exist.

    Our civility is part of a tradition that forgoes the use of violence only when we can be assured that our desire to cooperate can be reciprocated.

    d) for most of history, ireland functioned as the border territory of england. Just as ukreaine or riussia and poland and lithuania. Just as iceland from denmark. Just as the Colonies from England, and just as most of the anglo world under American protection.

    SO YES YOU CAN LIVE IN A BORDERLAND WHERE THE COST OF RULE IS HIGHER THAN THE BENEFIT, BUT YOUR TERRITORIAL RESOURCES MIGHT HAVE FUTURE VALUE, OR CURRENT DEFENSIVE VALUE – BUT NOT AN ANARCHY.

    If the Island 120 hypothesis is true, then to hit a Pareto Optimum for post-industrial civilization, 70% of population in production, 20% of the population in assets, 1% of the population in ideas, means that we would need to shift the distribution closer to 115 (closer to the early modern period’s, late medieval period’s, distributions). And that this process (winnowing) NEVER ENDS.

    What does that mean? That means that the developed countries have a 50%-60% population surplus. And the developing or underdeveloped countries have closer to 80% – 90% population surpluses.

    What does that mean? It means the total world population target is closer to the 1-2B ‘rule of thumb’ that looks more like the carrying capacity of the planet. Or the 500M-1B that looks like the optimum carrying capacity of the planet.

    As a person who’s lived in 5 countries, I look at it like this: you have the “brain” games (baseball and cricket). Games you have to be taught how to score. It can’t be done intuitively. For instance, you can’t intuit the R H E in a baseball scoreline. Cricket is even harder. I’ve never done a study on it, but I think the only high-IQ country that doesn’t play either of these is Germany. (BTW, chess is not a sport. Period.) Next are what I’d call the “gladiator” games: games that demonstrate the ultimate manhood in whichever country you’re looking at: NFL, Rugby, Aussie Rules, Ice Hockey. Finally, you’ve got the “populi” games: Soccer/Futbol/Football and Basketball, in which any imbecile can figure it out after 2 minutes. Which is why it attracts the types of hooligans they do. Of course, there’s crossovers. But most people have a favourite and you can tell a bit about them by it, wherever you meet them in the world.

In order to prevent the fall of our markets and trust we must develop market institutions. In order to prevent the failure of our institutions we must develop methods of measurement.

    A civilization fails when it can no longer measure success and failure.

    What must we measure? The treasury? In part. Because it is the first capital to expire. But in sum, all capital.

    What have we done in the 21st century to our measurements and to our capital?
