I bet I wouldn’t disagree with you on much policy. But I think you’re making a common error of thinking the literati (what’s written, gossip, ideas) has much to do with what those with judicial, political, military, and economic power do. They use the literati. That’s all.

Well, I avoid psychologism (blame or claim of defect) in favor of incentives (evolutionary necessity or advantage, rational incentive, rational choice), and that’s because I don’t attribute agency to people who clearly don’t have it. But sort of, yes.
