    CULTURAL OBSERVATIONS : BOMB SCARE

So, Johannes and I get up at 5:00am to catch the train to Lviv, and it turns out that our separatist friends called in a bomb scare – shutting down Kiev station. So no trait to Lviv this morning! But we managed a nice English breakfast and will try again this afternoon.

    Sigh.

THE MERE MORTAL’S JOURNEY TO ECONOMIC LITERACY

    1) -The Single Idea-

Economics in One Lesson, by Henry Hazlitt : Economic thought, unlike Moral thought, asks us to think about equilibrating consequences, and opportunity costs. If you understand the “one lesson” of the broken window fallacy, then that teaches you economic thinking in a nutshell.

    2) –The Application of The Single Idea To The Civic Society–

Basic Economics, by Thomas Sowell : Basic Economics applies this single principle.

    3) –The Application of the Single Idea To Production Distribution and Trade–

Principles of Micro Economics, by Greg Mankiw : Micro Economics textbooks deal with patterns of cooperation (business).

    4) –The Application of the Single Idea To Monetary, Fiscal, Industrial and Social Policy–

Principles of Macro Economics, by Greg Mankiw : Macro economic textbooks deal with the impact of fiscal policy (government spending) and monetary policy (issuance of new money or credit) on the economy, in the government’s effort to keep us all busy. 🙂

    5) –The “Missing Link”: The Operations of the Financial System that connects political policy with production, distribution and trade.–

    Rothbard’s Mystery of Banking, and;

    Nial Ferguson’s History of Money

The book that is missing between Micro and Macro, I do not think has yet been written, which is how the financial sector services the relationship between micro and macro. I think that book has not been written. In the meantime Rothbard’s Mystery of Banking, and Nial Ferguson’s History of Money, are the best and most accessible works. (Others might disagree). Rothbard was a terrible philosopher, but his works on money and banking are still the best I have found.

    6) –The Study Of Applications, Eddy’s And Flows-

Most advanced (niche) applications of economics are useful for professionals, but not terribly meaningful for citizens.

Personally, I don’t understand why we don’t get this stuff in high school.

    RUSSIANS, PROPAGANDA, PSEUDOSCIENCE AND LIES

OMG. We know that Russians LOVE pseudoscience and conspiracy theories, right? Of COURSE they believe this nonsense propaganda. It’s presented to them in pseudoscientific form, and it proposes conspiracies. When you live in a culture of propaganda, pseudoscience and lies, you tend to see the world as propaganda pseudoscience and lies. So when you see the actual events, propaganda, pseudoscience and lies are more rational explanations to you than believing the tedious and boring obvious explanation.

Fk. I love them but they’re nuts.

Its a whole civilization run on the equivalent of supermarket tabloid thinking.

  • GETING CLOSER : UNIVERSALISM AND HIGH TRUST Integration into a high trust polity

GETING CLOSER : UNIVERSALISM AND HIGH TRUST

Integration into a high trust polity, without damage (without parasitism or conquest), requires high trust, which in turn requires, truth telling, the nuclear family with prohibition on cousin marriage, legal enforcement of not only criminal but both ethical and moral prohibitions, codified as property rights, universal standing and loser-pays, use of the common language, eliminating of separatist dress, and celebration of the same holidays, and contributory production.

Cultural heterogeneity in the sense, that we aggregate into neighborhoods and rely on different rituals and signals within our tribes, is only possible if we adopt all theses high trust constraints.

The problem is that while we do that and people from every society can volunteer to do that, many people prefer to host in a high trust society as parasites. And for many groups, it is a necessary reproductive advantage. And advantage without which they would be absorbed into the polity at the loss of their identity.

So in this sense, you can retain your signaling identity but not your reproductive and competitive strategies.

I think that is enough to separate those who wish to integrate from those who wish to conduct parasitism.

WE GET AROUND OUR CURSE OF ALTRUISM WITH TRUTH, CALCULABILITY, AND UNIVERSAL ENFORCEMENT BY UNIVERSAL STANDING.
