    THE USE OF TERMS

Use of words under normative definitions is pretty poor instrumentalism. What happens to tools when you leave them lying around for any idiot to use? Well, they fall victim to the tragedy of the commons – no one takes care of those tools. They abuse them, they misuse them, and they care not what happens to them. And they are rarely if ever suitable for precise work – ever again. But somewhere exist the original precise versions of these tools, or their offspring, that reflect the precision necessary of master craftsmen. These tools are suitable for precise work. So whenever possible its in your interest to find the precise terms – because the origins of terms was that they solved problems for their creators. It is the problems they solved that constitute their necessary functions, not the various uses and abuses and misuses, that the common man as put them through in opening his barrels, cans and bottles. However, we must also keep in mind that dishonest men and well intentioned fools craft tools of deception that are equally precise. And again, is the problem that they solve with their deception that we must discover, not what they intended us to deduce from it. This is the operational approach to language: to discover the problem solved by the statement, not the intention of the author.

LIBERTY EXISTS ONLY UNDER RULE OF LAW AND THEREFORE ONLY UNDER EXPRESSION OF GENERAL RULES IN LAW.

As far as I know liberty can only be constructed under rule of law. The only question is the scope of permissible law: the range of property humans intuit to aspire to acquire, that the community agrees to organize and apply violence to defend.

So no, a ‘moral principle’ is just a deceptive argument, and a ‘guiding principle’ is just a ruse – a justification for not solving the very hard problem: of that which we consider to be property by our actions, and that which we are willing to enforce with our actions.

Everything else is just an elaborate deception or convenient justification.

(And I use the term justification as a synonym for self deception)

NO, MR. LIBERTINE, YOUR OPINION IS IRRELEVANT. 🙂

Your opinion as to whether your a libertarian or a libertine is immaterial. Either you’re a libertarian and the law must suppress all free riding in both public and private spheres; or you are an advocate for the most extensive free riding that is possible without the application of violence – by forbidding the use of violence in retaliation for free riding.

So you’re a libertarian under rule of law, or a libertine to escape rule of law.

Your opinion is not material – only your choice of the scope of property to be protected from parasitism.

    It’s that simple.

  • THE GREATEST TRAGEDY IN HUMAN HISTORY ? (revised- updated – expanded – reposted)

THE GREATEST TRAGEDY IN HUMAN HISTORY ?

(revised- updated – expanded – reposted) (worth reading: replacing the evil religion with what?)

RE: Lawrence Krauss says Religion Could Be Gone In a Generation.

    WHICH RELIGION?

That presupposes that Democratic Secular Pseudoscientific Humanism isn’t also a religion. Which is what he presupposes. And what all of the members of the Cathedral presuppose.

But, all things considered, there is no comparison between Christianity’s unification of Europe, or even the Stoic Schools, and:

    1) The death and destruction of Marxism led by the Academy, and the battle against it – resisted by the Academy,

    2) Keynesianism (reformed marxism) – led by the academy, and fought by religious groups;

    3) The cognitive, social, and normative damage done by postmodernism – led by the academy, fought by traditionalist groups;

    4) Anthropological, biological, and social pseudoscience and psychologism – led by the academy and fought by religious and traditional groups;

    5) The destruction of the law of property and the common law – led by the academy and fought by religious and traditional groups.

    6) The current pseudoscientific justification of democracy – led by the academy, and fought by traditional groups.

    7) The destruction of the family – led by the academy and resisted by religious groups.

So if we critically, empirically, rationally, and scientifically analyze the comparative differences, then all that we would find, is that eliminating mysticism and replacing it with general rules, has made more effective workers. But in every other respect, religion and tradition have been superior to rational and pseudoscientific and immoral advocacy by the academy.

    THE ACADEMY AS IMMORAL PRIESTHOOD

The academy functions as a religion because its central propositions – other than the nearly accidental success at disassembling the physical universe into general rules – are ALL FALSE.

In fact, physical science used to justify all the other falsehoods of the Pseudoscientific democratic secular socialist humanitarian religion, despite the contrary evidence.

THE ACADEMY PROFITS FROM SELLING IMMORALITY BECAUSE THE FILTERING OF A COLLEGE EDUCATION PROVIDES ACCESS TO JOBS.

We don’t learn much in the university, other than how to cooperate with one another, and to work hard on complex tasks in the service of professors. This turns out to be fairly good training for white collar jobs, since these behavioral disciplines are what are necessary for survival in white collar work forces. However, that does not mean that subject matter we are taught is valuable – just the opposite. IN the work force, students use almost nothing that they learn from the subjects that they study in college, and they remember nothing of college afterwards.

What they are taught does not serve society or industry – and arguable is in the disservice of the students. Because what they are taught does little but preserve the mythos of the Cathedral, the Academy and the State. It is an exceptional racket: to filter people by natural ability and teach them to work together, but teach them how to work together on immoral objectives.

If instead of paying upfront for this defective product – a product consisting of a behavioral half truth, and a mythological suite of pseudoscientific lies – we instead paid for our educations from a percentage of our lifetime earned incomes. You would see the subject matter in the Academy change rapidly to suit the needs of the customer, rather than the fraud of the Academy and State.

We have perhaps created the most perverse incentives in the world by sacrificing our parent’s retirements for an education that is harmful to our society, in every possible way, and has rendered our people incompetent to compete on the world stage, by the myth that a college education is the secret to wealth and prosperity, when in fact, your capability is the secret to your prosperity, the academy teaches you nothing, and is little more than a behavioral boot camp that tests your social, physical, and mental endurance at a very high price.

How this state of affairs, where the academy sells parchments claiming you have knowledge, to pay for new buildings and more administrative personnel, is materially any different from the priesthood selling Indulgences claiming you are forgiven of sins, to pay for the construction of St Peters and an increase in the number of members of the priesthood hard to determine – primary because there is precisely no difference whatsoever. All that has happened by the rapid expansion of the costs of university education, is that teaching professors are both paid less, are less secure in their jobs, are deprived of tenure, and they have nearly disappeared from the academy, while bureaucrats have multiplied, endowments have multiplied, and the physical plant – the buildings – owned by the academy has expanded dramatically.

Humans follow incentives no matter how perverse, and the academy, particularly once it could educate women, has done nothing but follow its perverse incentives. And it is impossible (I know) to argue otherwise.

So the Cathedral: the academy and state religion, funded by the sale of modern indulgences in the form of a parchment – and constituting an organizational which persists by profiting both materially and in social status, from the sale of dysgenic reproduction, via the generation of hyper-consumption, and the consequential destruction of the family, is a religion.

A religion wherein millions of horrid crimes against not only humanity, but western civilization, are justified by but one success – the success of physical science – over which the academy’s fallacies have no jurisdiction.

    The irony is suffocating.

So. Yes. It would be wonderful if we could stamp out religion in one generation. Especially the religion of pseudoscientific democratic secular, socialist humanism. Which has finally succeeded in overcoming the christianization of Europe as the greatest tragedy in human history.

    ALTERNATIVES

I have a wonderful suggestion. Why don’t we return to worshiping, as in, holding celebrations of remembrance for, our heroes in:

    1) Our Military generals and our statesmen.

    2) Our Philosophers, scientists and engineers.

    3) Our Saints, Caretakers, Healers, nurses, and mothers.

    4) Our Entrepreneurs, Capitalists, businessmen and laborers who struggle to raise us from poverty to prosperity.

    5) Our tribes and families which as kingdoms bear each other no offense, and every possible opportunity to learn.

    6) The planet that birthed, raised, loves and nurturers us, and upon which we depend.

    BUT WAIT!!!!

Oh. Wait!!! That would mean returning us to our original european religion before the state imposed Christianity upon us by forcing closed the stoic schools and imposing the church upon us, in the same way that the academy and state have incrementally destroyed our churches, and imposed pseudoscientific, democratic secular socialist humanism upon us!!!!

    HISTORY

History is the only thing worth celebrating. Our heroes the gods to speak to – meaning pray to. Because if we understand the lives of those heroes well enough, we will find that the answers to our prayers to them are already within us waiting to be heard.

SCIENCE IS THE PRESTIGE – A DISTRACTING GESTURE BY WHICH THE LIARS JUSTIFY THEIR LIES

Science is a ruse to distract us from history. The false dichotomy the liars have created is between the church and science, when it is between history, pseudoscience, and mysticism.

    OVERSING – UPDATE, LESSONS LEARNED

    Iain’s doing our taxes.

    Seeing how much we’ve spent.

    It’s not cheap.

    I’m crying – sort of – a lot.

    I have learned something.

    It’s an expensive lesson.

But I couldn’t do it any other way at the time.

And in retrospect, I wouldn’t do it any other way. 🙂

Net is that the savings from being here is not as attractive as it seems.

You only really, all said and done, save about 50%.

What these low burn rates buy you, is the ability to slowly develop the software you want, rather than sprint to develop the software you THINK you want.

We have thrown out the base code twice, and this summer, we even converted to websockets to preserve the user’s experience – and it was very expensive to do that.

So I could not afford, out of pocket, to develop an experimental product like Oversing in the states. It would be impossible at US burn rates (which is why no one does it).

Here I could not develop a product (of this complexity) under US conditions because we just don’t have the experienced people in this country to do it. So it’s not POSSIBLE really to develop a product like Oversing here under normal USA schedule pressure. Because no one knows how.

But if you want to save half the cost, and take half-again or more as long as doing it in the States, then doing development here is awesome. It’s beautiful. I’s ENJOYABLE.

    HONESTY:

My health, the work on my philosophy, my state of mind because of my health, were really expensive additions, and the communication barrier was much more expensive than I though – as much as 1/2 or more of the cost to date has been a function of maintaining my stress level so that I could get healthy again (which eventually worked) and the fact that I must incrementally develop the product because of the combination of lack of available UI design analysts and talent, and because it’s just not possible to communicate across these various boundaries that easily. I feel, only in the past four months or so have we achieved that level of transparency and communication that is taken for granted in any west-coast-startup.

I attribute that to the ***CULTURE OF US ACADEMIC INSTITUTIONS***. While the USA teaches very little in university of much consequence, it does seem to teach you the important western cultural values of trust, transparency, collaboration and teamwork. (Something I hear from asians pretty regularly.)

But had I been in better condition (Not recovering from my second near-death experience in three years) but also a divorce, and tossing my life upside down, I would have been able to drive the product more consistently.

I am not one to look back and ignore the lessons that life has taught me, and aside from three regrets (my divorce from a perfect wife for me, not staying quit when I resigned as CEO of Ascentium, and not joining the Literature department when they asked me to) I don’t have all that many really.

So life has taught me that I could have done this project in the states for about twice what it has cost me here (about a million here). And that I could have done it for half of that had I been in better health and state of mind.

But that would mean that I had not had the wonderful experience that I have had here, and I would not have the somewhat novel product that I do, and would have only a slightly better version of the product that others have brought to market.

So we are in dead-drop mode here for January,1, and this product will be ready for beta January 1. And it’s time for me to change from repairing myself, while building this product, to the next stage, where we take it to market, and my health and state of mind, have both been recovered.

    Cheers.

    Thoughts: Oversing Update:

In mid to late Q1 we will start to need:

A full time Sysadmin for managing, our builds, and customer instances.

A marketer who will handle relationships with analysts, an agency.

An agency (small cheap) with experience in our industry.

A full time designer for the UI, and web production work.

A full time writer for help, web and training content.

A full time video-clip producer (oversing is a very big application)

One or Two trainer for training customers, a training plan – that makes use of the writing and the video clips and not a new, separate, program.

A customer service (Helpdesk) person, here in Ukraine, and one on the west coast (Seattle). Also responsible for KB content.

One or Two Consultants for configuring instances, migrating data, workflows.Etc.

A Project manager to coordinate it all.

….(I will continue to play product manager role in true Jobs fashion.)

Nine or ten additional product developers in Ukraine – the scarcity being object oriented js.

Two developers (probably in Ukraine, possibly in the states), to build the central repository services.

An analyst for the Skills, Disciplines, Business Processes. Workflows,

A bookkeeper for the usual stuff (although there isn’t much)

An admin chick/office manager for the usual stuff (in Ukraine).

A bank that gives much better service than the one we have now.

    Yeah… that’s about right.

It’s ok. I look at burn rates in San Francisco and it makes me laugh. Fully loaded our burn rate would still not hit 3M/Yr at 250K per month. 😉 (Thank you Ukraine.) And Ukraine is very favorable to tech company revenues. 🙂

PUTIN IS CRITICIZING THE CATHEDRAL – HOW DO WE LEVERAGE THAT?

I wonder if there is any value in getting Putin to just use the term ‘The Cathedral’ as ridicule a few times – demonstrating the dominance of the ideological-and-failed-academic-church’s influence on the state rather than the pragmatic state’s influence on the academy’ such that it produces people who can succeed in the economy. The church has its place, but that is not the academy. And the academy has taken upon itself to replace the church.

And it’s an evil religion that the academy teaches.

It looks like uTorrent has something very naughty buried in its java code…. I can’t figure out what it’s doing. But it’s regularly doing something that it shouldn’t, because it shouldn’t be doing anything if its not running. I’m not interested enough to do the work to figure it out. I’d just assumed that it was a ‘clean’ app – and I was wrong.

    Java needs to die.

THE VALUE OF CRITICISM – AND LAUNDRY. 🙂

One of the ways you can test whether you are seeking justification for preferences or truth, independent of your preferences, is the degree of criticism you seek. If you’re searching for truth, finding good criticism is like finding a new source of good data. It’s something to be celebrated with excitement. Unfortunately, like good data, good criticism is rare. But in my little world, I see criticism as helping me – as cooperation. As reduction of my labor. As something I do not have to think about, and is therefore off my work load. Or as something I never would have thought of without the help of critics. The problem with criticism, like data from any form of instrumentation, is that it’s loaded and framed by the provider, and unlike instrumental data, to which we applied bias both in the construction of the instrument, and in the interpretation of data, the provider of that criticism is often not only engaged in bias, but either acting as a vector for a lie, or lying himself. The difficulty one faces in celebrating criticism is found only after the rather tedious and often frustrating work of determining whether or not the criticism just includes error and bias, as does all data, but whether or not it includes vectors for lies, or lies. Laundering criticism is dirty painful and socially unpleasant work, and that is why many avoid it. But you either have to do your laundry, or someone has to do it for you
