We construct a family score according to the presence of these three characteristics following E. Todd’s 1984 classification of traditional family types observed around the world. This family score is significantly associated with higher economic outcomes. This association is robust to other factors already identified by previous research as having a role such as geography, ethnic fractionalization, genetic diversity, religion, quality of institutions and legal origin.

Thanks for giving this book and this concept airtime.
Le Griffe has been talking about this issue for years. I have been stating it in relation to Pareto’s work on the distribution of property necessary to organise voluntary production. And the usual suspects in IQ research have been concerned about it for decades now.
In my work – high trust societies – its almost impossible to form one if the distribution is either too low or too wide.
Politics in particular suffers since at every two standard deviations people rely on almost entirely different frames.
Lastly ( I have been giving talks in this lately ) the west may be the fastest developing because of our oath and our discovery of truth. But in addition westerners relied upon manorialism, prohibition on cousin marriage, delayed child birth, and hanging of .5-1% of the population for more than a thousand years
So our success has just as much to do with our aggressive genetic pacification as it does to our institutions of truth, oath, jury, property, and common law.

When I was in seventh grade I remember the school wanting me to take another reading course because my tests came back with lower comprehension scores. Which I thought strange given my rather absurd volume of reading and the level of books that I was reading. My mother was convinced something was wrong and went to talk to the principle.
But I never connected my stunted ability to empathize with and therefore agree with the questions asked as an impediment to reading comprehension. And I am pretty sure I just saw most writing reliant I empathy as irrelevant or an attempt to cloud the issue.
Once I began to understand the influence of autism in delaying development it became obvious.
Now I find it humorous. Although I still have a problem with dramatic fiction unless it is loaded with ideas rather than experiences.
I suppose it’s why encyclopedias were so enjoyable to read so young. Lots of information but no incomprehensible experiences to create confusion.
To some degree the world is so much easier once you realize that you’re different. And just fine when you realize our brains develop at different rates in order to create an inter temporal division of perception.
Equality has been a catastrophe. The classroom has been a catastrophe. These are industrial concepts not human.
Unlike ants, our specialization does not produce easily visible physical differences.
Most of our differences are the result of minor variations in hormones which produce a symphony of specializations largely by accelerating or limiting some region of growth.
We specialize in conceptual biases.

AGAINST INVESTING IN RAND
It’s a dead topic. Rands arguments are not bad. It’s her followers that tend to be the problem for her philosophy not her work itself.
She made philosophy accessible through literature. But in doing so included those incapable of its mastery, and who instead thrash quotes about like chimps with sticks.
The more relevant question is why in an age of science one would even try to employ rationalism given that the language of discourse is now science, economics and law.
What this means is that the bar to discourse has been raised leaving rationalism ( noncontradiction) behind.

And so you burn energy defending what you understand but which is of no political or innovative value.
Liberty is a genetic preference of a permanent minority. Rand can merely justify that preference and insulate it from moral critique.
But other than that defense there is no solution there and no value there .
And the more opportunity cost you waste on that malinvestment the less investment you make in something useful with which to transform the world and advance existential Liberty.

I hate to resort to scifi references but scifi is the modern mythology of Liberty.
But in retrospect Clarke’s HAL becomes a threat when taught to lie.
This is the problem with the Talmud and its transformation into Christianity through the adoption of Mithraism.
It is, in an effort to produce separatism, a training manual for lying.
Christianity, in an effort to form a resistance to aristocracy, is a great lie. Because lying succeeds if enough people lie.
And enough people lie because it’s in their interest to lie.
