    Had she picked a spot with limited privacy it would be one thing. Had she placed a blanket over her shoulder, that would be another. But they picked a spot where she was ADVERTISING and that’s quite different. It’s disregard for purity in the commons.

    We all have different disgust and purity responses. Those disgust and purity responses are genetic in origin. And the vary for a very good reason, just like most of our moral instincts vary for a good reason.

    As far as I know the public is fine with blankets over your shoulder and tucked in a corner. Otherwise the public forum is not your home. We worked very hard for thousands of years to create higher demand for behavior in the commons than in the home and bedroom.

    I realize it we all like to think we are ‘normal’ but we are not. That’s a cognitive bias we evolved in order to give us confidence in the face of our distributed instincts.

    Demand for ‘pure’ commons behavior is an advanced technology we created just like high trust.

    Those cultures that did not do so, did not develop high trust – and in most if not all cases, no commons. And certainly no civic societies.

    Primitivism is primitivism and should not be considered tolerance. It’s just primitivism.

    So what if instead of the presidency, we added another house, and the top 100 individuals who got votes in the election got to form a parliament and select their own leader to act as president (prime minister)?

    Then we return almost all power to the states, recalling the 14th amendment and all consequent legislation dependent upon it. leaving only 2/3 of the budget for the federal government(military and insurance) and returning the other 1/3 to the states (discretionary spending).

    It is, if:

    (a) it doesn’t occur under a representative government open to special interests that can seek rents, and instead operates by either direct democracy if people are marginally indifferent, or economic democracy if they are substantially different, or by different houses using either direct or economic democracy for diverse polities.

    And (b) if there is rule of law (universal application) whose decidability in law is against parasitism,

    (c) and where there exists universal standing (universal right of suit), so that groups of individuals can punish organizations that engage in parasitism either directly, or via the state.

    Capitalism is moral ( non-parasitic and produces rational, voluntary, cooperation ) if and only if there are no means available FOR IT TO BE USED IMMORALLY.

    There is no common good other than cooperative non parasitism. After that it’s all a matter of market choice in production of consumption or commons.

    Why the UK penchant for nonsense arguments? The Romans held disdain for the immorality of the greeks for the very same reason that the rest of the world holds disdain for Brits.

    Sentences, paragraphs, and speeches rarely consist of recipes. Just because a man refers to a cake, does not mean he cannot bake one from constituent parts..

    Just because a public servant refers to a policy agenda, does not mean he cannot create a practical one from practical measures.

    OMG, what a hollywood-engineered piece of propaganda for resurrecting their own morally dead.

    But as dialog for smart people, with a good cast, if you ignore the almost non-existent excuse-making narrative, you can find Sorkin’s style in there.

    What is that style? The discourse of inferences.

    The opening scene where she walks into an office and the conversation is not reduced to proletarian simplicity by actors pretending to be members of the upper middle educated classes.

    It’s a model of dialog only possible if you first flesh out your character’s entire life, interests, portfolio of views, and

    Unfortunately, all these characters have the same progressive (fantastical) lives, interests, and portfolio of views.

    Characters should represent real world entities, working through mythic (universal lessons) problems. Mythology requires exaggeration – which we usually call hyperbole in order to draw attention to relevant properties of individuals and circumstances that they encounter.

    I am not impressed by the depth of psychology one can explore in the nuance of incentives of the dysfunctional – which is the postmodern trend using psychologizing for status signals. In fact I am not sure that the entire literary edifice is other than a vast church for the distribution of immorality for the purpose of obtaining status signals despite doing nothing productive on this earth.

    Why should one care about the depth of your dysfunctional feelings, rather than the means by which you conquer them and life’s challenges?

    The postmoderns, feminists, socialists, libertines, are all a cancer fed by consumerism, made possible by debt, made possible by the burning of thousands of years of western evolutionary history.

    Kill them all and let their gods sort it out.

    Popper and Hayek treat information (knowledge) as the model for analysis of man but fail to complete it. (Just as physicists treat the universe as information.)

    Hoppe (by way of rothbard) creates the method of categorization, measurement, and operations of information: property and voluntary cooperation.

    Popper: sources of knowledge and ignorance.(individual/critical/truth)

    Hayek: use of knowledge in economics and society (group/law/cooperation/liberty)

    Hoppe: propertarian ethics (cooperation) as entities (property) and operations (voluntary transfers).

    Doolittle: the division of perception, cognition, knowledge and labor by reproductive demand, and the use of voluntary cooperation to consolidate it into a network that acts on the behalf of the network of individuals.

    Together this creates is a system of constant calculation, whose test is volition (demonstrated use of existing knowledge)

    In my early work I referred to the problem of ‘calculation’. I knew it was the problem I had to solve. I just didn’t realize how enormous a problem it was other than it was the only way of preventing thievery in government.

    I knew my writing was difficult to understand because of the influence of writing software. It took me a very long time to understand that I was intuiting the relationship between the existential dependence of software (computability) and testimonial (existential) truth. And that the only way to write this way was to write in the same style as programming.

    Like I tell people – my autistic intuition finds patterns. I just have to work out what it’s telling me and determine if its true or not. For this reason I never think I am particularly smart – it’s more that I am gifted, and I work hard at translating my gift into language.
