Conduct of many small raids costs little but creates great uncertainty and costs the host thousansd of times as much in defense. In our past, we could retreat via horse, retreat to our forests, and the muslims could retreat to the deserts, or today retreat into slums and favelas. The value of armies is looting. The value of raiders is in imposing costs. One can, as has ISIS, graduate from raiding to looting, to decimating. But this destroys capital, and ensures your eventual defeat if you attempt to hold an economy and profit from it.

    The best weapons in an urban skirmish are mace – to buy you opportunity, hardened and weighted knuckles – to give you extra mass and minimize absorption of shock, a lighter and lighter fluid – to create uncertainty, and area of effect damage, molotovs – artillery at a distance, and a motorcycle helmet for defense. You cannot be identified easily, your weapons are impossible to find easily, and and your opponent can be disabled (mace), routed (fire), ranged( molotovs) and killed (fists). Yet you preserve your mobility, and ability to sprint into attacks, maneuver, and to disappear. This supplies weapons at long, medium, close, and short range.

    Understand that you are not trying to win so much as provoke escalation to the point where there is sufficient confusion and opportunity that you can bring real weapons to bear.

    It is nearly impossible for a state to defend against mobile infantry that relies upon fire, because fire is far more dangerous than you are, and its effects far longer lasting.

    Revolution today requires fire, ending power and data transmission, slowing commercial road and rail traffic, and overwhelming first responders. Once first responders are overwhelmed they become the next target of action. At that point the state must admit defeat call in the military, and all one need to is move action from on urban environment to the next.

    what wil you see? those places that think theya re getting better are so because they have so far to go, while those places that are already there, cannot go farther without extraordinary investment.

    or stated another way, the others are catching up by consuming our institutional, cultural, and technological advances.

    We are, on the other hand, in exchange for cheap goods, allowing our incomes to be exported (trade deficits) overseas instead of investing them in maintaining the advantage that we have held for 500 years.

    a) until the first world war there were separate economic tables for ireland becasue it was so poor, that its only equal was subsaharan africa. in fact, like the eastern european jews, irish were considered intellectually and morally inferior.

    b) Until the late 1800’s the irish practiced (as urban blacks do) serial marriage. Serial marriage is only possible when there is limited to no capital to transition between generations.

    c) an island is exempt from the primary cost of territorial defense that leads to the formation of states: a military. A borderland is excempt from the priary cost of territorial administration.

    d) for most of history, ireland functioned as the border territory of england. Just as ukreaine or riussia and poland and lithuania. Just as iceland from denmark. Just as the Colonies from England, and just as most of the anglo world under American protection.

    SO YES YOU CAN LIVE IN A BORDERLAND WHERE THE COST OF RULE IS HIGHER THAN THE BENEFIT, BUT YOUR TERRITORIAL RESOURCES MIGHT HAVE FUTURE VALUE, OR CURRENT DEFENSIVE VALUE – BUT NOT AN ANARCHY.

    If the Island 120 hypothesis is true, then to hit a Pareto Optimum for post-industrial civilization, 70% of population in production, 20% of the population in assets, 1% of the population in ideas, means that we would need to shift the distribution closer to 115 (closer to the early modern period’s, late medieval period’s, distributions). And that this process (winnowing) NEVER ENDS.

    What does that mean? That means that the developed countries have a 50%-60% population surplus. And the developing or underdeveloped countries have closer to 80% – 90% population surpluses.

    What does that mean? It means the total world population target is closer to the 1-2B ‘rule of thumb’ that looks more like the carrying capacity of the planet. Or the 500M-1B that looks like the optimum carrying capacity of the planet.
