  • Why The Science Denial Is a Moral Question

To: Lee Mcintyre (all) Given: FIVE TROPES OF TRUTH DENIERS 1. Cherry Pick Evidence ( Problem: this definition fails to identify the use of edge cases as general cases. ) 2. Believe in Conspiracy Theories ( Problem: this definition fails to identify that it’s been converted to a moral, not scientific issue. ) 3. Rely on Fake Experts and Denigrate Real Experts (Problem: (a) fails to acknowledge that the ‘source of truth’ (the state) has not engaged in testimony that is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but positioning and pandering, and (b) fails to identify that expertise is narrow within any domain, and non-transferrable (see economics) as much as 90% of published peer-reviewed work fails to replicate, and that postwar behavioral pseudoscience has dominated the academy, and that IQ, personality, sex, class, race, cultural differences are substantive and universally obvious in the data – thereby conflating morality and science – creating the current conflict that is the origin of our civil stress. 4. Engage in illogical reasoning (Problem: yes, moral reasoning is largely irrational when applied to amoral contexts. But by conflating amoral and moral it’s not illogical. Just wrong. So don’t convert the amoral to moral by relying on coercion rather than understanding.) 5. Demand science be perfect that it’s about proof, rather than warranty. (Problem: If we forced all scientific publications and all published authors to warranty due diligence of their work against error, bias, wishful thinking, and deceit – and did the same to all science reporters, how fast would the industry self-correct? How many funding streams would be canceled? There is a reason some of us specialize in ‘prosecution’ of pseudoscientific as well as supernormal and supernatural claims. There is a reason we track retractions. ) Then: The problem remains, what incentives are driving science deniers? Evidence suggests that they feel out of control, feel alienated or persecuted, or are trying to create or preserve status and self-image, by preserving a falsehood that makes them feel they’re in control: absence of MINDFULNESS. We don’t train people in mindfulness any longer, and religion is no longer a viable means. So this is why the only method of ‘convert’ someone from denial to acceptance is whey they TRUST YOU. Face to face. Listen to them. Delivered on their terms with respect and understanding. Under a condition of Trust. Thereby re-converting from a moral issue back to an amoral empirical issue. This is why I’ve been complaining about the approach to shaming ridiculing moralizing and psychologizing anti-vaxxers. It’s counterproductive. It creates a moral issue out of an amoral issue, meaning that evidence cannot persuade, only under trust. And trust only by shared understanding. You have to show understanding to re-convert what has been converted to a moral issue, back into a scientific issue by restoring trust. By politicizing the issue of climate change and vaccinations we just make a moral issue because the means of coercion are dishonest and immoral, not because of any other reason. Most conspiracy theories that are true consist of a chain of rational incentives. Most that are false cannot be constructed as a chain of rational incentives. This is why conspiracy theory is a subset of the technique of fraud by of BAITING INTO HAZARD. Causality:“Trust the science” is in the same category as “Women must be believed”, “Everyone knows that“, and “God said so.” As such, any immoral form of coercion converts a question of truth to a question of morality – by the MEANS of conveyance: coercion. Scientists, The Academy, and the State have converted our high trust society into a lower if not yet low trust society, losing all authority, because of convenient lies to advance multiculturalism and the one world hypothesis. You can’t expect trust to maintain in science when the primary issue of the day is 70 years of pseudoscience in behavioral sciences. So, you know, IMO philosophers’ job is to police the informational commons, integrating and rejecting the findings of evidence. Justifying the failure of scientists, the academy, and the state as ‘believe scientists’ without their warranty is no better than believing any other commercial or political organization without its warranty. The academy is claiming authority while acting as a clerisy. And it’s exasperating that we haven’t increased the productivity of it since about 1963. The absolute number of innovative scientific talent appears relatively constant. Any demographer can explain why, just as easily as they can explain why Japan has the same number of ‘smart people’ as the USA despite 40% of the population, or why the USA can never compete with China, nor India with China,  Nor why south America cannot achieve European economic parity for the same reason, The problem is moral, not scientific. And the academy, and the scientists, and the state, and the courts, have been immoral. You can’t claim authority while everything that matters to the people is spoken in comforting falsehoods, and then expect their trust when you deprive them of choice. The divide is among people who benefit from buying the comforting lies, and those who pay the cost of buying the comforting lies. You’re all to blame.

Ian McGilchrist irritates me with his woo. The divided brain is necessary for a bilateral life form to reach a state of decidability. Yes, he’s trying to make a point, then scale it to the problem of modernity’s psychological alienation. He’s not wrong. He just crosses the line.

  • More Against Critics of Sabine Hossenfelder

—“Isn’t her work about superdeterminism?. The maths thing is just her daft opinion about why progress isn’t fast enough for her. Maybe she is just annoyed her theory isn’t taken more seriously.”—
In physics (like all sciences) there are different disciplines. People who produce theories. People who design tests. People who produce data. People who work with data, people who synthesize data that’s been worked on. This is the division of labor in almost every field in or out of the sciences. It’s the same even in entrepreneurship.
There is a human tendency to evade seeking to understand, seeking to produce alternative arguments, and seeking to deny their need to cognitively and behaviorally adapt by the use of ‘gossiping, shaming, ridiculing, rallying, moralizing, psychologizing, undermining, canceling, and denial.’ (GSRRM for short).
You’re making an ad hominem attack on the individual, not on the argument. It means you can’t defeat the argument. If you can defeat the argument you might be able to explain the incentives that that person is following. But GSRRM so to speak is claiming you have knowledge and understanding that you do not demonstrably possess.
In Sabine’s case she makes a very clear set of arguments (and she’s right) and this debate has existed in mathematics and physics since Hilbert. While most fields reformed SOME of science – requiring we limit claims to testimony that is in fact testifiable – the failure of mathematicians during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to avoid foundations in set theory and instead in computation re-idealized mathematics.
This has resulted on a conflict between what is testifiable in physics under the limitations of mathematics that is insufficient for the description of observables. And it has resulted in mathematical observables not physical observables. And this is all an extension of ‘just calculate’. Which is where ‘math and physics went wrong’.
S0 the failure of our physics community over the past seventy years is largely due to the incorrect founding of mathematics in sets, producing a mathematics of analogies rather than existence, and a resulting physics of analogies rather than existence, and limited to testimony that causes the failure to transform the discipline back to realism, naturalism, materialism, and away from ‘infectin’ by idealism.
You may or may not be able to understand that and I’m one of the top two or three people living that understand this problem – and all of us have a background in computer science and artificial intelligence (and me in economics and law), where it’s well known that mathematics has a limit and ‘we’re at it’.

#Dune Verdict: “Eh. Unworthy of a Part 2.” Villeneuve like Ridley Scott is a visionary creative director, better than average director, but has a shallow intuition for storytelling of great and deep mythos. V’s Dune is a pretty but vapid, repeat of failures of BR2049.
    End it.

  • RE: Gregg Henriques

RE:   PROPOSITION: Psychology, Sociology, Philosophy, The Academy, Democratically Elected Political Parties, and the Media are all limited by the same set of ‘lies’: because they are seeking to ‘cheat the universe’ not adapt to it. And we have run out of ways to cheat nature at our present level of scientific, technological, and economic scale:

    1) The false promise that man will coalesce on the equalitarianism and egalitarianism of the extended family, clan, and tribe when evidence is that in the presence of sufficient wealth that CAN possess the luxury of pursuing their genetic, intuitionistic, and contextual bias – that they will.

    2) The enlightenment false promise of an aristocracy of everyone instead of the demonstrated evidence of equality producing a peasantry of everyone.

    3) The Cognitively Feminine Counter-Revolution against the Darwinian (cognitively masculine) explanation of man and the eugenic revolution it inspired: Freud, Boaz, Marx et al.

    4) Where that cognitively feminine counter-revolution made four false promises:

      • i) the end of scarcity with the false promise of endless growth,
      • ii) the nature of man as moral rather than an amoral and practical superpredator, both male political and female social, for whom we’ve developed a spectrum of institutions to constrain our behavior to moral (reciprocal and proportional),
      • iii) the malleability of man given the wide difference in adaptive velocity (intelligence) and self-regulation (conscientiousness).
      • iv) and the necessity of continuing natural selection given that the difference in the distribution of people and peoples is due to the group limitation on neotenic evolution, and the accumulation of genetic load, where both mutation and sortition cause the formation of classes that are organized by their rate and value of their rate of adaptation – because mankind evolved to specialize in adaptation itself, and we sort by adaptation itself, and we compete by adaptation itself.
    • BTW: What you’re both talking about is the “Wilsonian Synthesis” or the unification of the sciences. (E. O. Wilson – Consilience )

DIVORCE: Yes the problem is we need a divorce so we can pursue our genetic, biological, interests because there are no incentives NOT to, and every incentive to do so. Because we can organize over larger geographic territories of social, economic, and political cooperation. We desire to sort to common interests, with the political, economic, social, and cognitive organization that most suits our genetics, intuition, and self-selected knowledge. I would thank Gregg for the framing of a divorce fighting over children since this is the most accurate and intuitionistic narrative that explains our condition. (Of course, I agree that divorce is necessary since no incentives to can be constructed. Or said differently, agrarianism caused a homogenization of relationships that under industrialization are no longer of value, so we are seeing the return to demand for separation, isolation, and return to speciation that was ended by the unification of the world by the Europeans under the age of sail. The only moral solution is divorce. There is no possibility of reconstructing agrarian incentives, without reconstructing the demands of the agrarian economy.   NOTES:
