Across The USA Travel Notes:
1) Boston to Cleveland ohio was an easy drive. Same for cleveland ohio to rochester minnesota. Beautiful time of year. Green leafy trees just about to turn.
2) Left Rochester, and drove about 20 hours yesterday with two short naps. No idea where I got the energy. ๐ But covered south dakota and wyoming and … reminded again ‘nobody lives out here’. At least gas stations are automated.
3) I spent last night driving across wyoming – which involved dodging something on the order of twenty episodes of deer on the highway. Not exactly relaxing. A real life video game.
3) Montana is gorgeous. I still hold that switzerland bavaria, austria, and italy’s po valley along the alps are the most beautiful places on earth. But Montana is right up there. I should make Missoula today.
4) There are nice proper american people who have high mindfulness, high openness, and proper manners and ethics as soon as you get west and north of chicago and away from the major cities. Riddle me this: How do you get farmer culture in higher density? ;). Caused me to think a lot about environmental demands for mindfulness.
5) I’m in Bozeman Montana this morning at one of the many coffee shops that pepper any college town. They have home made pumpkin pie. ๐ Every time I come here I want to stay.
6) Listened to a bevy of audiobooks on this trip. All were disappointing. Especially Turchin’s. Not necessarily a direct criticism of an intellectual I respect, but a criticism of the inability of the entire field to discover causation rather than mere correlation – when correlation merely encourages more of the same bad policy we’ve spent seventy years advancing.
7) Only drawback to this trip is the Yakima pack attached to the top of the car is a heck of a drag on the airflow and causes even this car to eat gasoline. ๐
Everyone should do this kind of thing. Meeting real people counteracts the news media, the government, and the social media nightmares.
