We have a lot of relationship mythology to unlearn – and most of it was developed during the victorian era, but not practiced until later, just like the chivalric nonsense wasn’t practiced until far later. These are class mythos sold to uplifted lower classes.

Yes. I think (I wonder), if those of us who watched the change happen had an easier time than those who were born into the changed world. I remember the traditional world, I experienced the change, and only distantly observe the consequences.

It’s more than that. Throughout most of history a woman was manual labor for her parents – which is why there were bride prices. They were losing a worker.
For women, marriage meant sovereignty: her own children, laborers, and man, and self-determination. Marriage meant FREEDOM.
