    What don’t I understand?

Other than games – including the piloting of machines – what good are vr headsets?

I see the value of overlays. I can see getting so used to magicleap that I can’t travel without it.

I can’t see the value in immersion other than for games

    (feedback on ui design)(from elsewhere)

Well, good answers but not helping you with the cause other than “Monotony” – which is not a great term, but close.

Great design in Magazines, Posters, and User Interfaces is the product of FONT, FONT SIZE and WHITESPACE, Further improved with COLOR, and *harmed* with LINE.

These properties: Font, Font Size, Whitespace and Color TRAIN the user to understand (a) what is important, and (b) how to scan for information, and (c) how to see patterns in the data at a glance rather than think about them directly.

Reading is a very COSTLY effort for people, so scanning to identify “which of these things doesn’t look like the others” or some variant of the principle is what you want to find.

SPATIAL location develops over time with EXPERTISE, once the user has subconsciously memorized the user interface. (Experienced users like an Excel-style Interface and new user’s don’t.)

In other words YOU CANNOT rely on INTROSPECTION when designing an interface unless you know whether you are ‘testing’ the design for an entry level or experienced user.

You ‘Train’ the user by use of Font size (priority), Font style (fonts convey relative meaning). After fonts use SHAPES (such as the corner tab someone else advised). After Shapes use COLOR. Color should be last.

Color should either indicate TYPE, or it should indicate THIS THING IS LIKE THE OTHERS. If you have to ‘decorate’ with color, (a colored bar or background) this usually represents a failure, since it has no ‘meaning’.

Test your design by doing separate elements in ‘layers’ and then turn layers on and off. Your eye should tell you.

    -CARD INTERFACE-

Now, you have combined ‘Cards'(spatial layout), but use a ‘table’ Fonts and colors.

It certainly doesn’t appear that cards are a good UI model for your solution, so first make sure you are helping the user. Cards work primarily if they hold images, and must be constantly rearranged. Otherwise tables are usually better, because they’re easier to scan.

For example if you take a pack of playing cards and throw them on the floor you can still tell them apart no matter their direction. If you throw your ‘cards’ on the floor, then they will all look the same.

So you are relying upon positional indexing by your user, then you are either using the wrong model, or must solve the playing-card-metaphor.

    HELPFUL HINTS

I try to advise people to find a magazine page layout to work from. Of course, the gold standard is the NYT paper and web site. All type and white space.

But starting with a visual model (the monopoly board game for example) usually will help designers avoid the ‘boxes problem’ that plagues amateurs.

    OVERSING UPDATE

I think were we are at the point on Oversing that I get to say “I told you so” about denormalization.

I love php because of its use of strings. you can store all sorts of nonsense like they do in WordPress, and just pull out what you need, rather than building lots of dimensions. For entities with limited relations it’s just so wonderful. And if you need more information you denormalize to a document database (non-relational) for quick retrieval.

Oversing is pretty demanding. But we benefit from the fact that unlike say, Facebook, and more like say Atlassian, we don’t commingle customer data. So that means that the largest database we encounter is a single large customer.

This one issue we have left (we tried one experiment and it doesn’t work) is one in which the workspace tells you a lot about the counts of each filter you can apply. And in normalized form these are individually inexpensive but collectively costly.

So we sort of have this choice: Make everything visible but use security only to limit access (most likely). Denormalize everything we can and hope that the tests hold up. (increases fragility). Just test the basics and pay the performance penalty (unlikely).

I prefer the first in an open business. But I can see some businesses hiding information like titles and descriptions.

    (I love geek-i-tude)

    Curt.

When I am done, we should be able to program an AI of sorts, using propertarianism, both to limit the AI’s negative actions, and to help it respond to us not only with word-usage, but with ‘understanding’ of that word usage. Where understanding refers to our different basic emotional and moral intuitions.

    FB TIP

Replying underneath someone allows them to delete your comment when they delete theirs.

I try to save everything I write, everywhere, so if something is worth saving, I post it as a new comment rather than a reply.

Same for something written by others: Copy the author’s text, then share his post, and past his text into your share. This will preserve your text (I think).

MORAL ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE’S EFFECT ON MAN

I am pretty sure it’s possible. It’s not even that difficult. It’s just expensive. But rather than being the moral police of machines, what if machines can be the moral teachers and police of us?

    Interesting thought.

I hate to resort to scifi references but scifi is the modern mythology of Liberty.

But in retrospect Clarke’s HAL becomes a threat when taught to lie.

This is the problem with the Talmud and its transformation into Christianity through the adoption of Mithraism.

It is, in an effort to produce separatism, a training manual for lying.

Christianity, in an effort to form a resistance to aristocracy, is a great lie. Because lying succeeds if enough people lie.

And enough people lie because it’s in their interest to lie.

  • What Is The Next Great Technological Revolution? Its Not What You Think.

[I]’m going to posit a very different technological revolution, that is far more important. Lets look at a set of revolutionary inventions:

What I am working on, and what I hope is the next great revolution, is to provide a reformation to counter the Pseudoscientific Era (Boaz, Marx, Freud, Cantor, Mises) imposed by Academia, the same way that the British (English and Scottish enlightenments) provided a reformation against the era of mysticism (Justinian and Augustinian imposed Christianity). We know now that the Flynn effect is caused largely by the incremental conversion of human thinking from a multitude of case specific rules of utility (think recipes) to a limited number of general rules describing the behavior of similar systems (think theories). Depending upon who you ask, this education in scientific thinking appears to have created a 20 point increase (more than one standard deviation) in demonstrated human intelligence. Likewise, the application of scientific thought to the social sciences in order to overcome the equivalent of the second christianization of European civilization – this time with pseudoscience instead of mysticism – will very likely produce an equal if not greater affect on our economies, our polities, and our demonstrated intelligence. And like the conversion from mysticism to physical sciences, the conversion of pseudoscience to social science, will be just as difficult and costly and require an equally challenging and costly effort. We have only half-escaped our primitive mysticism. The next revolutionary science is not robotics. It’s social science: morality: natural laws of cooperation. With which any advancement in machine intelligence is governable, and without which it is a risk. THE WARRANTIES OF TRUTHFUL TESTIMONY If you cannot warranty that your testimony survives these tests then you cannot claim you speak truthfully.
