Trump is making a different point: that the capital necessary to supply the EU health systems is only available because of american subsidy of the world patterns of transport and trade, defense, and heavy costs of maintaining world oil prices so that europeans don’t suffer from the consequences of a return to pre-free trade networks. And he is correct. What he’s saying is yo have to find a way to pay your own way now because the world has now developed so much under american Pax Americana protections that the USA no longer has a sufficient economic advantage to pay for your safety.
The USA could have taken a very different postwar strategy of fully defeating china and russia, and instead of free trade, mandated a system of world taxation of all trade paid to the USA – something which was entirely possible, and would have been in american interests.
However americans continuing british hyper moralism didn’t want that responsibility given our history of seeking exit from empires.
The truth is that if we wanted to we could take out the iranians quickly, chinese rapidly, the russians more slowly, (which his happening by proxy), and create that world empire Americans are already accused of.
Its just not ‘american’ to deprive others of freedom and responsibility as good world citizens instead of helping them achieve it.

Yes. You’re correct. And it’s not just ironic its irritating. It would be less irritating if europeans didn’t claim they were somehow superior when it’s our subsidies that allow them their luxuries.

While Taraban excels at explaining motivation, I would additionally argue the cognitive science from first principles, and in this order:
    1. Instinct (over reason – feels over reals)
    – – Intuition
    – – – – Impulse
    2. Hyperconsumption (Fear of Missing Out)
    – – Attention
    – – – – Imitation
    3. Risk Avoidance (Safety)

    4. Inclusion (Herding) (Fear of being left behind)
    – – Conformity
    – – – – Imitation (again)
