(by Eli Harman) [T]he conventional wisdom is that women are selfless and generous and that men are selfish and acquisitive. But this conclusion is exactly backwards, because it is formed without looking at opportunity costs. Women’s socialism is in fact profoundly selfish and self-interested, given their risk-aversion and security seeking. Liberty and independence are risky and therefore costly and women are – by and large – not willing to take those risks or bear those costs, even to achieve the greater success it holds out as a possibility. Men are more willing to risk personal failure and destitution in order to obtain wealth and success, or to endure them stoically in order to create a prosperous society for all. Another common misconception is that men are practical and women sentimental. But this one, too, misses the mark. A common trope one finds in history and fiction is men going off to war and women pleading with them not to. This is held out as an example of women’s noble sentiments vs. men’s ruthless pragmatism. But the explanation is actually very nearly reversed. War, even at its most necessary and helpful, represents (with certainty) taking personal risks and bearing personal costs, in order to obtain a shared (but uncertain) benefit (victory, security, etc…) Women, as the ultimate egoistic pragmatists, are simply less likely to see this as a worthwhile bargain, even a degree removed from the most severe costs and risks. It is men’s idealism and altruism which leads them to strike it. Women *appear* more generous because they selfishly appeal to men’s generosity. They *appear* more sentimental because they make pragmatic appeals to men’s sentimentality. But the reality is otherwise.

OVERSING UPDATE
I think were we are at the point on Oversing that I get to say “I told you so” about denormalization.
I love php because of its use of strings. you can store all sorts of nonsense like they do in WordPress, and just pull out what you need, rather than building lots of dimensions. For entities with limited relations it’s just so wonderful. And if you need more information you denormalize to a document database (non-relational) for quick retrieval.
Oversing is pretty demanding. But we benefit from the fact that unlike say, Facebook, and more like say Atlassian, we don’t commingle customer data. So that means that the largest database we encounter is a single large customer.
This one issue we have left (we tried one experiment and it doesn’t work) is one in which the workspace tells you a lot about the counts of each filter you can apply. And in normalized form these are individually inexpensive but collectively costly.
So we sort of have this choice: Make everything visible but use security only to limit access (most likely). Denormalize everything we can and hope that the tests hold up. (increases fragility). Just test the basics and pay the performance penalty (unlikely).
I prefer the first in an open business. But I can see some businesses hiding information like titles and descriptions.
(I love geek-i-tude)
Curt.

When I am done, we should be able to program an AI of sorts, using propertarianism, both to limit the AI’s negative actions, and to help it respond to us not only with word-usage, but with ‘understanding’ of that word usage. Where understanding refers to our different basic emotional and moral intuitions.

“THE GREAT DISTRACTION: THE 20TH CENTURY EXPERIMENT WITH COSMOPOLITANISM’S SECOND ATTEMPT AT MYSTICISM AND THE SECOND TRIUMPH OF SCIENCE”
I mean, pretty much anything written through 1929 was pretty good. But starting with Boaz, Marx and Freud, and culminating in the 1970’s, cosmopolitanism and feminism tried and failed to create a new order – they merely destroyed the european order. Thanks to science we will overthrow conquest of the west by women and jews and slaves a second time.
Someone else want to write that book? It needs writing.
I have enough work to do.

THE SPECTRUM OF ECSTASY (by Dominance)
We are excited not by INSPIRATION (adding something) but INVOCATION (activating something)
we think our religions are Inspiring. But they Activate. Most of what they activate is the submission to the pack response. This is a form of ecstasy.
PACK/HERD/SUBJECTIVE/FOLLOW
-4) Transcendence (euphoria)
-3) Submission to the pack / spirituality (ecstasy)
-2) Revelation (joy)
-1) Inspiration/imitation (pleasure)
0) Calm (neutrality)
+1) Curiosity/Cooperation (pleasure)
+2) Acquisition (joy)
+3) The Kill (ecstasy)
+4) Sex (euphoria)
INDIVIDUAL/OBJECTIVE/LEAD
I can’t help think that the dominance-submission spectrum describes aggregate behavior, but that dominance and submission may in fact represent different behaviors – or at least, that one can find aspects of the entire spectrum from multiple mental agents -which is probably what occurs.
