Manners are (were) a way to signal trust.
We (responding to dysgenic social pressures) have shifted away from family derived forbearance (active) and into socially derived tolerance (passive). This has eliminated the familial incentive to practice manners so as not to lose the leeway and momentum one’s family name provides (forbearance being the a family’s way to assist you over mistakes, bad judgement calls and rough spots of life), leaving a handful of courtship incentives (that are mostly mocked by the same groups pushing us away from forbearance) and a few market incentives (the customer service example).
The push for equality and tolerance have cost us trust and the effected the resulting loss of signal strength of manners.
