Micro States produce commons politics culture and institutions suiting the genetic demographics, and degree of evolution, of their populations, while benefitting from shared juridical and military defense between one another and foreigners. They cooperate by trade – not commons.
The United States would result in something on the order of 300 micro states, with various norms traditions laws, and regulations, with blue cities forming city-states, and the rest forming constantly changing territorial states. This would allow very different polities.

European Tradition: Humans are no different from other domesticated animals, and can only be granted as much freedom to do harm as they demonstrate agency by NOT doing it. Democracy without demonstrated ability was a catastrophe.
“Individualism” is a bit of harmful sophistry that obscures the underlying truth: in the west alone can we earn freedom(self), liberty(group), and sovereignty(for all), for the simple reason that the first principle of western civilization is self-determination via reciprocity.

So the failure of the utopianism of the ‘enlightenment’ was the presumption of the possibility of escaping the laws of the universe, rather than directing more of the proceeds of production to non-consumable (useful) commons instead of consumption and reproduction.
Pleasant lies are much cheaper than unpleasant truths creating an economic imbalance in favor of lies. And the left has innovated in lying faster than we innovate in truths to suppress their lies.

With a little effort, we can teach anyone and everyone how to identify and understand the Abrahamic method of deceit. Once you see how it is done, and how certain religions, cultures, and the left, make use of that system of lying you are immune to it, and can easily explain it.
