The USA won’t cede the region. Doesn’t believe china can mount an invasion of Taiwan. And china doesn’t want to take a risk. So it’s in a difficult position in relation to the USA. China is embattled – borderlands, indians, hong kong, yet pubilc opinion is that china is rising.

China would like to become an internal consumer but is desperately poor. And america is no longer willing to fund china’s internal consumption by continuing american consumption. China has only one ally: Pakistan. China’s fear is that USA will block its naval access to trade.
