When Russians on the street ask for ‘democracy’ what they want is Rule of Law and to end corruption. It’s the same as in Muslim countries. They ask for Sharia because it’s all they know of. But we sell Democracy (a bad) instead of Rule of Law: isonomy, tort, sovereignty (a good).

1) The crackdown was not brutal. It was reserved.
2) The Russians want NOTHING TO DO with western liberalism and see democracy as catalyst (They’re right).
3) The Russians want Rule of Law (“Isonomy”) but don’t know how to ask for it.
4) Putin is absurdly popular.
