The industrial revolution was the single most important thing to happen to humanity -ever. As far as I know the development of Greek Culture, Law, and resulting Reason is the second, and the industrial revolution depended upon it. The third was either metal or agrarianism. Before that it was fire. Though nothing compares in sheer impact in time than the industrial revolution.
