Awareness != Sentience != Consciousness
Many animals are aware (react to)
Many are sentient (interact with)
Few are conscious (cooperate in)
And consciousness is a spectrum.
AFAIK our experience of consciousness emerges from the emergent ability to simulate the mind of another.
