The west depended on citizen soldiery (all able bodied men) and the axe-club, spear, phalanx, bow, rifle. So we have always had rotation despite the dark ages. Today we have classes with little rotation but possible rotation. It’s the same across time.

@Erbhof We’ve always had mobility – never had the caste system. Only the trifunctional system.
Warriors, Priests, Judges, the people.
barbarian > slave > serf > fremen > citizen > sovereign
Those who fight (rule), pray (administer), those who work(Labor), slaves, domesticated animals.
