I don’t have time to look up what book it’s in but I’m pretty sure it’s G S Becker that explains this along with crime and race and everything else in social science.
We protect animal labor including our own (and slaves too), until we no longer need animal(incl human) labor.

@bierlingm @MattPirkowski So the net is that due to our post agrarian, industrial age, individual wealth, we have the privilge of historically hyperconsumptive, dysgenic, population-collapsing ideas, incl attempts to deny the laws of the universe:physical scarcity, behavioral amorality, natural selection.
