THE FINAL WORD ON FREE WILL
FREE WILL: The most sophomoric debate in philosophy. The question arises only to the degree that we are responsible for actions that externalize costs onto others. In other words, it’s a LEGAL and MORAL question. So the sophistry originates in a failure of OPERATIONAL definition.
Every other question asks something else: “What limits of all kinds narrow or influence any given decision in any given context?” This is the study of neural economy and cognitive biases. So again, operationalize a question into a complete sentence – or its sophistry.
This is why I make the case that philosophy consists almost entirely of sophistry one step removed from theology, and is largely dead for other than the purpose of determining a preference that is otherwise undecidable except as a preference.
