Religion provides excuses, not causes. Strategy provides causes that religion justifies. The problem is the group strategy: Gypsies(Petty) > Jews(Commons) > Muslims(All).
Only the Chinese and the Europeans had natural incentives. The south Eurasians had the malincentives.
Why?
