Hanging has always been the primary means of execution in western civlization. Lynching was developed during wartime when when justice was too far away, and horse thieves were interfering with military stock. In the Lynch period from 1882-1903 – there were a total of 3,337 lynchings, 1,169 white, 2,060 black, 108 unknown. For serious crimes. The competent legal authorities were hundreds of miles away, and the crime was heinous. Blacks also formed lynch mobs, and hanged whites, i particular for rape. It’s purpose was punishment to set example. It was for vengeance. It reflected the community’s sense of justice, and free of political or legal artifice.
