CULTURAL MEMORY: CHEERLEADERS AND MAJORETTES
High schools had a special class for girls who were cheerleaders or majorettes, that taught them the rules of basketball and football.
—“Basketball is obvious, ad you’re close to the players. But football is complicated, and you’re far away from the players.”—
–“Can you imagine running around in the freezing fall weather in a short skirt, shaking pom poms or twirling a baton?”–
MAJORETTE
A majorette is a baton twirler whose twirling performance is often accompanied by dance, movement, or gymnastics; they are primarily associated with marching bands during parades.
CHEERLEADER
Cheerleading cheer for their team as a form of encouragement. It can be performed to motivate sports teams, to entertain the audience, or for competition. It can range from chanting slogans to intense physical activity.
You understand of course the purpose is community building and participation in a heroic ritual.
