@LLaddon The caliphate (Spain), Iceland (Denmark), The free Cities (Holy Roman Empire) and the Pale (Poland, Lithuania, then Russia), America (England), and the 20th (America, Israel), were all borderlands permitted some autonomy by the empire in exchange for taxation.
