Technically ‘pagan’ is the name of a christian criticism of heathens the way marxists used capitalism to criticize the middle class. Heathen means, as far as I can tell, ‘religion of the hearth’, or more correctly ‘folk religion’, or ‘natural religion’. Whereas mono = unnatural.
