THE LITERARY AND ARTISTIC DEAD ZONE: NO FUTURES. BECAUSE WE CAN ENVISION NO UNDISCOVERED VALLEYS
Propertarianism suggests to me that the sense of wonder – the undiscovered valley – is a sensation we feel when presented with opportunities for consumption and acquisition.
But we are not facing that experience today. We face instead, being overrun by the hordes. And the hordes merely discovering a route into our valley of resources.
The age of sail, the age of colonization, the age of continental expansion, the age of industrial consumption, the age of existing from the underclass of labor and joining the consumer classes, the age of space, the age of technology, the age of medicine.
All our futures – all that we can imagine – are dystopian because none of them are free of competition from humans.
The undiscovered valleys are full of predators: us.
There is no undiscovered country.
There is only hordes of us in the mirror looking back at us.
