Most of the money-making male leads do ‘play themselves’. Because audiences want to live through THEM in the circumstance of the character, not the character himself. Although it’s rather obvious it is lost on most. The best way to improve as an actor is to increase your skill at displaying emotional range. But the audience likes YOU as a person, displaying a range, in the character’s circumstances.

Hence why most great male leads are conservative: so are most men.

It’s also why most dramas place middle-class people in extraordinary roles.
