    MORE ON HOMOSEXUAL DEVELOPMENT
“Born this way” is true. However, as you probably suggest, one can be born with genetics and in utero development that are developmentally strong or weak. For the weak, that development is rather easily interfered with by trauma, chemistry, and social environment. At present we appear to have a preponderance of the trifecta of interferences affecting the populace.

My advice is to think of the arc of sexual development (just like in neoteny) as a process with a spectrum of determinism from weak to strong. And that there are many stages under which weak determinism can cause failure.

–“Curt, Aren’t you relying on Blanchard for the origins of homosexuality?”–
    (regarding a recent study)

More correctly, I’ve stated repeatedly that we don’t know the answer but that it’s in utero, could be mother’s immune system reacting to testosterone, could be some other immune response, but that it does run in families, and it does occur more commonly in non-first children. This research report uses a novel interpretation of the statistics on a small sample set of 64 men, and is not statistically significant, yet the effect does persist, it’s just small and affects both sexes. So I remain of the opinion that among the available theories the most likely is some in utero immuno reaction that is severe enough to harm fetal development but oddly enough not enough to cause miscarriage (which is the body’s usual reaction). The fact that no miscarriage is produced only reinforces that the cause is an amplification of some regular process of sexual development (in the brain) such that doesn’t cause miscarriage.
So in other words, we would need a theory that was more causally parsimonious than the current state of the science suggests.
Every other theory has been less so.
As usual, my standard of confidence in any scientific theory is quite high compared to others. But my work has taught me that the combination causal parsimony and precision of description are almost never wrong.
    Cheers

Men yes a bit. Women no. Women evolved for neuroticism. from brain structure to chemistry to reinforcement by experience. Sexes overlap a bit – ergo minorities of effeminate neurotic men and masculine stable women

    HERE:
What biological properties are associated with neuroticism?

    Answer
Neuroticism, one of the Big Five personality traits, is associated with several biological properties and mechanisms. Here are some key biological aspects linked to neuroticism:

    Brain Structure and Function:

Amygdala Activity: The amygdala, involved in processing emotions like fear and anxiety, tends to be more active in individuals with high neuroticism, especially in response to negative stimuli.

Prefrontal Cortex: There’s evidence suggesting differences in the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in executive function and emotional regulation, might be less effective or less active in those with high neuroticism, leading to difficulties in controlling emotional responses.

Hippocampus and Memory: The hippocampus, crucial for memory formation, can be affected. High neuroticism is sometimes associated with smaller hippocampal volumes, which might relate to the heightened stress responses seen in these individuals.

    Neurotransmitters:

Serotonin: Lower levels of serotonin or less efficient serotonin pathways have been hypothesized to relate to neuroticism due to serotonin’s role in mood stabilization.

Dopamine: Alterations in dopamine pathways, which play roles in reward, motivation, and pleasure, might contribute to the emotional instability seen in neuroticism.

Norepinephrine: Increased activity in norepinephrine pathways, which are involved in arousal and stress response, could explain the propensity for anxiety and arousal in high neuroticism.

    Hormonal Responses:

Cortisol: While not a universal correlation, as previously discussed, high neuroticism can sometimes be linked to altered cortisol responses, either heightened or blunted, reflecting a dysregulation in the stress response system.

    Genetic Factors:

Genetic predisposition plays a significant role. Variations in genes related to neurotransmitter systems (like serotonin transporter genes) have been associated with levels of neuroticism.

    Immune System and Inflammation:

There’s emerging research linking personality traits like neuroticism to immune system activity. High neuroticism might correlate with increased inflammation markers, possibly due to chronic stress.

    Autonomic Nervous System:

Neurotic individuals often exhibit a more reactive autonomic nervous system, leading to increased heart rate, sweating, and other physiological responses to stress.

    Neuroplasticity and Brain Connectivity:

Differences in neural plasticity and connectivity patterns might underlie the emotional processing differences in neuroticism. For instance, less efficient connectivity in networks involved in emotional regulation could be a feature.

    Sleep Patterns:

Neuroticism is often linked with sleep disturbances. The biological mechanisms might involve a hyperactive stress response system impacting sleep regulation.

These biological properties do not act in isolation but interact in complex ways, influenced by environmental factors, life experiences, and other genetic predispositions. The study of neuroticism from a biological perspective is an active area of research, providing insights not just into personality but also into mental health and resilience against stress.

    1) re: “…Everything with less agency has higher neuroticism and everything with more agency has less.” Should be self explanatory. The stronger, faster, smarter, more dangerous, more innovative, more adaptive you are, relative to your stressors, the less time you need to spend on predicting vulnerabilities. The opposite is also true. Ergo women are more neurotic than men especially because they must devote the majority of their neural effort to the prediction of the behavior of multiple children, given their frailty vs the world and everything in it, and the relative frailty of women vs men.
    2) Consciousness in the literature is almost entirely some sort of spiritualism masquerading as philosophical or scientific nonsense. In practical terms it’s an artifact of the time delay of memory persistence necessary for goal setting (wayfinding) in competition with new competing amplitudes of possible goals (reactions etc). In other words if you have enough hierarchical memory you will develop it. Period. End of story. It’s a necessary artifact of the neurological process of disambiguation, organization, episodic formation (the index) and prediction from previous episodes via that index, until we find something or some set of things to seek. Likewise the brain evolved from the organization of movement, to the organization of movement relative to a nest or it’s flock, or school equivalent, in relation to locations for seeking food. So with episode (location etc), memories of other episodes, attention as goal setting, and recursive wayfinding to reach the goal, all cognition evolves as just increases in complexity of that set of primitive functions. The only interesting bit of prediction that affects our consciousness, was the evolution of the social predictions of physical (imitation), emotional (empathy), and rational (sympathy) prediction of others. Once you have that ability you gain the ability to abstract that into working with tools, and from there increasing progression into increasingly complex abstractions.
