YALE ENDS HISTORY OF ART COURSE
Of course, because art is a technology like any other it can’t be taught without exposing the dominance of western civilization in the evolution and volume of innovation in the arts.

“HOW CAN A PERSON BECOME A GREAT FICTIONAL WRITER IN JUST A SHORT TIME?”

You can’t. Writing is a craft. Craft is process of developing skill through trial and error. You can read say, Vonnegut on writing, Campbell on the monomyth, the basics of plot types, archetypes, points of view, how to research on locations, observe and write dialog by people from different social strata, and writing backgrounds for your characters. You can read (real) poetry (particularly shakespeare) to learn the art of sentence building. But the start-middle-end of composing sentences, paragraphs, scenes, chapters, and stories and weaving them together while maintaining the reader’s interest in what is yet to be revealed by you is just something you have to practice. (Good writers tend to be quite smart, have worldly experience, and have something interesting to say that’s novel at least in some context unfamiliar to the reader.) I can write an argument like no other. An exceptional essay. An adequate screenplay. A less than adequate story. And a weak novel – but it is a matter of interests. To write a novel, or a story you need to have something to say that’s vaguely interesting, adequate interest in the subject, and adequate skill in the craft, and more than adequate art in retaining the reader’s attention.

    Q:”THE TRIALS OF ACHILLES?”

—“You keep mentioning trials of Achilles but I have no idea what that’s intended to refer and I wonder if you’re not thinking of labors of Heracles?”—Martin Štěpán

The greeks invented the tragedy (nietzsche), and it was a novel technology of social order that justified sacrifice as heroism, and unity in that sacrifice and heroism. it made tragedy a positive social theme of shared debt (cost) experience.

The Iliad is a tragedy, the tragedy of achilles, as he goes through multiple trials.

The trials of achilles refer to each of the episodes where he prevails – only to ask, but at what cost?

“Trial: a person, thing, or situation that tests a person’s endurance or forbearance.”

It is easy to see why the jews tried to create an underclass Achilles. Because the tragedy had already been saturated across the greek world: “undermine from within.”

The same is true for the Odyssey. if we take achilles , alexander, and odyssey we have the entire arc of tragedy. The ‘weak’ (defensive) version is Arthur and Jesus.

I don’t have a classroom so I use the public as my classroom. It was an experiment. it’s been ridiculously rewarding, even if the number of overconfident ignorant young men is … tedious.

We have a course going at the Institute where people singn up and get the content as I release it. It’s a drip process but it works.

I use a particularly interesting teaching method (king of the hill) more suitable for men so I attract a certain audience.

And so far the project is largely complete. It’s a matter of editing it down (simplification).

Some people (example: Taleb) publish a book every few years, and finally get to their philosophical project. Some people publish a book every ten years. I’m sort of on the ten year plan. And if you look through history (kant etc) it takes about ten years. Duchsene took ten years. It takes time. The first book is done but I don’t want to release it first. It’s too targeted to libertarians. The second book is at 80%+. The constitution is somewhere in the 50% range. It’s getting there.

I don’t see the point in lecturing until something this complicated can be published. Although we will undoubtably start this year.

And I’m far better in person when teaching real time than I am on video – it’s just my nature to interact with the class. So I assume that the videos of those presentations will be more effective than the online content, the courses so far, or the book.

by Göran Dahl (I fking love this man 😉 )

A great document with lots of information regarding admixture events, ancestry proportions, what modern people are made up of etc.

The Modern sections with “Yamnaya” proportions are somewhat misleading, because they don’t use actual Yamnaya people as proxies for Yamnaya ancestry, but rather two of the three components that Yamnaya people are made up of: CHG (Caucasian Hunter-Gatherer) and EHG (Eastern Hunter-Gatherer). There is also a third component that has been left out: EEF (Early European Farmer), which is why Yamnaya proportions in modern Europeans and even ancient post-Yamnaya populations seem lower across the board.
