    If fear was in the background, poverty was in the foreground. Leningrad was crumbling. The faint smell of sewage hung over the canals. Shop shelves were empty. Queues formed rapidly whenever there was a delivery of shoes or sausage. There were no interesting books in the bookstores, and there was nothing but stiff party jargon in the newspapers. Television was boring. You had to have special clout to get theater tickets. Toward the end of my stay, one of my friends asked if I would consider marrying his cousin in order to help him escape. “You’ll be saving someone’s life,” he told me.

    …the living memory of the USSR is now truly fading and the nature of the USSR—its peculiar awfulness, its criminality, its stupidity—is becoming harder and harder to explain. The sense of being surrounded by lies; the underlying anxiety that someone might be listening or reporting on you; the constant, screaming, inescapable propaganda; the sullenness of the crowds on the Metro; the memories of mass terror just below the surface; the useful idiots and the cynical sycophants who supported the whole thing, both in Russia and abroad; all of that is now absolutely impossible to convey.

    My concern is the revival, with amazing speed, of a belligerent Russian state, one led by men who were taught and trained by the Soviet state and are thus prepared to use a familiar blend of terror, deception, and military force to stay in power. One might argue, of course, that such men never really went away. But their level of aggression is rising just as our once formidable ability to counter them seems to have vanished altogether. Instead, we have trouble simply recognizing them for what they are.

    This became patently clear in March 2014 just after the Ukrainian revolution, which saw the ouster of the Russian-aligned Victor Yanyukovich and the restoration of the country’s democratic constitution. On Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula, “little green men,” as they later came to be called, suddenly appeared. Equipped with guns, wearing unmarked uniforms, and driving unmarked military vehicles, they began methodically taking over local government buildings and television stations. In almost every major city, local “politicians,” some of whom had previously been leaders of criminal gangs, seemed primed to welcome the little green men, almost as if they had been warned.

    The Western reaction was one of confusion, amazement, consternation. What was happening? Was this a local uprising? A civil war? Were these unidentified men Russians from Russian? Were they Russians from Crimea?

    In the quarter-century since the fall of Communism, we’ve forgotten what a cynical, unprincipled, authoritarian Russian regime looks like.

    I knew exactly who they were: Russian special forces. I knew it because they looked, spoke, and acted exactly like the Soviet special forces—then known as the NKVD—who had entered Poland in 1939, the Baltic states in 1940, then all of Eastern Europe in 1945. Like their modern descendants, those Soviet interior ministry troops wore unmarked uniforms or sometimes Polish or Hungarian uniforms, even if they didn’t speak Polish or Hungarian. Like their modern descendants, they also claimed to be coming to the aid of local forces—oppressed minorities, local Communist parties—which in some cases hadn’t even existed until they arrived.

    There was nothing unusual about this in the Soviet era. During the whole of its existence, the USSR never invaded another country; no, it merely came to the aid of oppressed minorities or fraternal parties. But it never left without imposing—or, in Afghanistan, trying and failing to impose—its own totalitarian system. When the NKVD, later known as the KGB, crossed any border, it always arrested potential dissidents, took over the media, shut down civic organizations, nationalized companies, and created the fear and poverty I’d later see in Leningrad.

    And this is exactly what Russia, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, a former KGB officer, did after coming to the aid of the “oppressed Russian minority in Crimea” in 2014—though instead of nationalizing companies, the Russian occupiers stole them from Ukrainian owners and gave them to Russians. Time moves on.

    Since the Crimean invasion, the Russians have advanced into eastern Ukraine using similar tactics. Adding a twist to the narrative, they have now entered the Syrian conflict too, in order to come to the aid of the fraternal Assad regime. Not only the United States but all of what used to be called “the West” has been flummoxed by these moves, even thrown into strategic disarray. And no wonder. In the quarter-century since the fall of Communism, we’ve forgotten what a cynical, unprincipled, authoritarian Russian regime looks like, especially one with an audacious global strategy and no qualms whatsoever about sacrificing human life. Let me say it again more clearly: Almost all of the men who currently rule Russia (and they are all men) were taught and trained by the KGB. Their teaching and training shows. Why would it not?

    These tactics are not exactly the same as the ones Putin learned in the KGB in the 1970s and 1980s, but neither are they entirely different. In the past decade, for example, the Russian regime has reconstructed a state-run media machine far more sophisticated than anything the USSR ever invented and yet similarly blinkered. Although there are dozens of domestic news outlets, entertainment channels, and magazines, they all toe the same political line, with only a tiny number of exceptions. There is an appearance of variety but a unity of messages. Among them: The United States is a threat; Europe is degenerate; Ukraine is run by Nazis; Russia, unfairly deprived of its role in the world, is finally becoming a superpower again. To anyone who remembers how Communist ideology once sought to express all of history and all of contemporary politics through the lens of one giant conspiracy theory, this is nothing new. But who genuinely remembers?

    Abroad, Russian-funded television, websites, and Internet troll factories make similar points in multiple languages. Russia also backs—in some cases financially, in other cases ideologically—politicians, businessmen, journalists, and “experts” who give out similar messages. They include Marine le Pen, the leader of the far right in France; Gerhard Schroeder, the former chancellor of Germany; Vaclav Klaus, the former Czech president, who is now associated with a think tank created by a sanctioned Russian oligarch. Members of the Hungarian and Austrian far-right parties have traveled to Crimea to support the Russian occupation. Syriza, the far-left party in Greece, has deep links to Russia, too.

    Fake research institutions, “peace movements,” fictitious political groupings, useful idiots, and agents of influence, both paid and unpaid…We’ve been here before, too. True, the ideology has changed. These days Russia supports whoever is willing to promote its interests, whether far-left or far-right, and whoever can help undermine the established European order. Instead of attempting to foster an international Communist revolution, the primary goal is to keep Vladimir Putin in power and make the world safe for Russian corruption, Russian oligarchs, and Russian money. Which might, in fact, prove a lot more appealing than the dictatorship of the proletariat.

    RED, PURPLE, AND BLUE AMERICA: IS THERE A DIVIDE?

    The most honest answer is not to create a false frame of ‘we’ and instead break it by voting patterns (see Pew Research) for an empirical analysis not one of confirming existing priors by guessing correlations.

    Roughly speaking, the north-south divide present since the civil war remains.

    Primarily, people vote by two criteria: Race, Religion and Marital status. a

    In other words, people vote their reproductive strategies. Which should be obvious.

    White men vote red and always have voted as such.

    White married women vote predominantly red and have voted as such.

    White single women vote predominantly blue by the largest margin (again obvious)

    Everyone else votes by race (blue) against the white absolute nuclear family.

    Ever since the South abandoned it’s post-reconstruction prohibition on the Republican party (the party of Lincoln, and the party against slavery, and against the expansion of the southern alliance into the western territories), the parties have increasingly shifted demographically to reflect white absolute nuclear families – with the family as the central unit of reproduction, production, and education that preserve capital (red) – against the traditional, serial-marriage, and single mother (fatherless) families that cannot preserve capital in the homestead.

    People retain their reproductive strategies, family structures, moral codes and norms across many generations. It takes about 400 years to rotate a family upward in social and economic class. (yep. sorry.) The four waves of British Isle immigrants still use the family structures, norms, and values that they did prior to migration. The Germans still use theirs. The Italians theirs. The French theirs. Et al.

    No one assimilates morally or normatively at all. We assimilate commercially, and commercialism is America’s cultural tradition. But politically we never assimilate at all. Why? Because political action by nature of its imprecision is a demonstrated preference of a moral, not empirical, not commercial bias. And when we call upon our intuitions in the face of overwhelming choices, we do what nature evolved us to do: decide by our reproductive strategies.

    Why? For impolitic reasons: largely speaking northern Europeans eradicated their lower classes through a combination of manorialism, delayed reproduction, and aggressive hanging of 1/2-1% of the troublemakers per year. And anyone who understands the theory of compound interest will likely understand the tremendous genetic impact of that process over the 1000 years of hanging, and the 3500 years of agrarianism. Effectively, all northern Europeans are members of the middle class, and protestant – what is called ‘the Hanjal line’. The Catholics represent largely the unmodified natural distribution of the classes, practicing traditional families. The Africans that came as slaves have returned (thanks to 60’s progressives) to their traditional serial marriages (70% of all births to single mothers).

    Correlation is not causation. Humans are unequal. We carry our tribal histories with us in our genes, in our family structures, in our morals and norms, because these were and remain, reproductive strategies.

    As such all votes are demographic votes. No one assimilates. No one changes. Some reproduce more, some reproduce less, and he who reproduces more than others eventually wins. No one is converted. No one is persuaded. No one is convinced. At least no one sufficiently convince to alter his political action sufficiently to affect outcomes.

    Net is, all our political debate is a Victorian parlor game. Nothing more. We are, in matters beyond our direct perception, such as political choice, mere puppets to our genes.

    If that doesn’t sour you on the irrelevance of democratic choice nothing will: in the end, over time, the class that reproduces most wins. And because majoritarian rule forces a monopoly of control, the lower classes with greatest reproduction win. And under redistribution, we transfer rates of reproduction from the middle class to the lower. And therefore transfer our future to the most numerous of the lower classes.

    Diversity decreases trust, decreases economic velocity, increases political conflict and increases demand for a totalitarian state as arbiter of differences.

    Americans, Canadians, and Australians have a higher standard of living for the sole reason that the anglos used advanced weaponry (including germs) to conquer primitive peoples and sell of the land and unexploited resources to generations of immigrants. It has absolutely nothing to do with our way of life other than the initial immigrants from Britain practiced common law (which is empirical), and were almost entirely from the genetic middle classes (the french in Quebec are from the lower class, hence aside from their Catholicism and french love of authority, their difference with english Canada). The germans were not a problem to integrate, and so we never hear about the challenge of german immigration despite the fact that the majority of white america is of german ancestry not British. That is because they were not a problem. Everyone else was. If you trace supreme court decisions they reflect the religion and class of the person voting.

    It hurts. It’s true. That’s all there is to it.

    The only thing that melts in our non-existent melting pot, is rule of law. Everything else is just an expression of the ongoing battle between our genes that we call class, race, and religious competition.

    Democracy is sufficient means of deciding how to make use of scarce resources among multiple priorities. It is an insufficient means of deciding how to make use of scarce or plentiful resource of any kind between competing interests.

    Science very often tells us what we don’t want to hear.

    The democratic era, in the future, will be seen as a pseudoscientific one.

    Just as the Religious era is seen as a mystical one.

    They’re both networks of falsehoods.

    Comfortable lies.

    The truth is quite simple. We are super-predators that have found that competition through economics productivity is superior to competition through direct violence.

    Western utopianism ended with the abandonment of communism that had held the rest of the world in regressive poverty. We were able to enjoy luxury goods because of privileges granted to us by our predecessors. The spoils of democracy (and any r-selected behavior) are luxury goods, not beneficial goods.

    Time to give up pseudoscience, the same way we gave up mysticism.

    As painful as it may be.

    If you put the ‘dumbing down’ of the British population in historical context, it is an attempt to establish a secular version of christianity under pseudo-scientifc argument, and the closure of the church, and the extermination of the aristocracy, using forcible conversion by the state, using the same aggressive means that christianity was a successful attempt to establish a mystical christianity, using forcible conversion by the state, and the closure of the pagan temples and stoic schools, and the extermination of the aristocratic families. In the modern era, feminism and socialism and the attack on marriage and family have caused a population collapse as great as any plague in history. In the ancient era, the transfer of rates of reproduction from the middle and upper class to the lower classes, plus rapid immigration by the lower classes, was followed by devastating plagues that left the western roman empire indefensible. Our middle ages did not experience immigration, so we survived that plague. IN the ancient and modern world we did not, and may not unless we learn from it.

    In this context there is no difference between the prelude to the dark ages in the collapsing roman empire, and the prelude to another dark age in the collapse of the British empire.

    There is no talk necessary.

    We will destroy, fight and kill, or be little more than the priests at Lindesfarne as the boat people come to steal from us.

    (apologies to my russian friends. I must do my job countering propaganda in Ukraine. this is my job. I have to stay on message. I am an advocate for russian people. But I am at most an advocate for truth, liberty and prosperity: rule of law.)

    The Longer Russian Conquest of Ukraine continues, the more men Ukraine trains to kill Russians. The better our army and volunteers become. The less tolerant of Russian interference in Ukraine they have. The less tolerant of the slow progress of the Ukrainian Purge of Russian and Soviet sympathizers. The more Ukrainian’s hate Russia. The stronger we get.

    The Kremlin and our ousted ex-president conspired to weaken the Ukrainian military and build up the secret police, so that the re-conquest of Ukraine could would easier and for Russia to rebuild her empire.

    The longer we fight, the more experienced our men, the better for Ukraine. The longer Russia fights, the worse for her economy, the more effort the west puts into pivoting again toward Russian containment.

    1) Bring Russians home to Russia and out of occupied and formerly occupied territories.

    2) Pay Ukraine for its losses by 99 years of discounted gas and oil.

    3) Abandon hopes of a land-bridge between Russia and the conquered crimean peninsula.

    4) Cease intentionally false propaganda and worldwide deceptive interference in the informational commons. Close of as china has if you want, but stop lying to the rest of us.

    5) Write an honest account of your history:

    (a) Russians are muscovites not Rus.

    (b) Keiv is Rus(Scandinavian), Slav, and European(Germanic), and was the prize over which Russians(steppe mongol culture) and germans(teutonic land-river-sea agrarian protestants) fought.

    (c) Northern Slavic Civilization (at least Poland, Slovakia, Ukraine, if not also Czech’s, Lithuanians and Belarus) requires a Core State and NOT Russian or Germanic or Latin Catholic domination. The obvious candidate for the core state of the northern slavic peoples is Poland, which if it merged with Ukraine and Slovenia would be a population of 85M people controlling the best farm land on the european plain, if not the world. The moral geo political strategy is to assist these countries in that formation, not seek dominion over them, nor their integration into either empire.

    (c) Russia conquered vast territories during the empire period (understandable) and retains the territory west of the Urals – for now. Despite Sinification. But the spread of Russian culture, government, ethics, and influence has be catastrophically detrimental to the more advanced countries in eastern Europe. And despite Russian mythology, there is no question at this point that german administration would have been superior to Russian.

    (d) Russian influence which combines the despotism of the worst Mongols, the Czars, the Early Jewish Soviets, the Later Peasant Soviets, the 90’s Oligarchs (gangsters), and Putin’s New Monarchy. Of them, except for the use of intentionally false propaganda, Putin (Monarch/President for Life) has done the best job of rebuilding Russia and rule of law.

    (e) Declare Russia a constitutional monarchy, make Putin king, and end the pretense otherwise. Russians are too low trust and nihilistic outside of the two major cities to rely on democracy. Democracy is a failed experiment. That’s just true. Say it proudly.

    (f) Continue the program of gradually suppressing corruption, extending rule of law. This process is working. It is not working fast. But it is slowly working.

    (g) Use the vast oil wealth not for personal enrichment of the new Boyars, but to invest in and build a diverse modern economy.

    (h) Get the Chechens out of the secret police and purge the muslim influence wherever it exists.

    (i) Stay on message that the american experiment in exporting democracy which has failed everywhere, including at home, has been detrimental to mankind. “We are different in our needs.” is a perfect message. This is the only message needed to justify Russian world actions and self interest in preventing revolutions. Assuming we are all building advanced economies, the form of government is irrelevant.

    Russia need not play fools games. Sufficient population. Sufficient armament. Sufficient resources. WHat’s missing are rule of law, and a diverse economy. And spending short term oil wealth on redistribution and privatization rather than the diversification of the economy (see silicon valley) is wasting an opportunity.

    UNITE THE CIRCUMPOLAR PEOPLE.
