    THE NEXT CHURCH

—“The universe was, is, and will always be beyond human scale. Religions are an evolved response to this complexity. They work. I don’t see how we can figure out what to do without a positive value system, even if it might fail the Darwinian test. I don’t know. All this is too much for my tiny brain. The problem is too big and complex.”— A Friend

Its actually simple. And just as we need multiple languages to talk to multiple layers of ability (classes), and just as we need multiple states to serve the interests of multiple layers of tribes; and just as we need multiple sciences to break the world into parts that we can disassemble; and just as we need multiple economies (military (slave), commons (serf), union(unskilled labor), market (producers), and finance (gamblers), we need multiple NARRATIVES just as we always have: the religious for the weak, the philosophical for the able, and the heroic for the superior.

Those narratives already exist. The problem is thinking You’re everyone (democracy and equality) rather than the member of a class.

The universe may beyond human scale, but the scope of action available to humans of different ability varies dramatically from those who can barely care for themselves, to those that can care for others, to those that can manage others, to those that can organize others, to those that can organize many, to those that can advocate for as many as they can serve.

Choose the tool that serves the scale that is possible for you.

What I hear is from most people is “i want to be led”, or “I want to control”. Rather than I want to do. I want to know what to do. I am willing to do the good. But I must know what it is?

it is the good that you can understand and not bad.

And between the greek and roman heroes, the scientists, the arthurian legends, and the stories of the church servants, it is hard to imagine yu cannot find it there.

What I think you mean, and what I think most people mean, is that they lack an institution that assists us in organizing under those principles – those narratives.

Which is why I think the next iteration of the church talks to each class, not to the peasantry.

    (from a christian discourse elsewhere)

Western man has not abandoned god. He has abandoned the church for having failed to achieve in the modern world what Aquinas achieved in the ancient: the reconciliation of prior eras with the knowledge obtained in the current.

Aquinas saved the church by reconciling it with greek reason. There has been no Aquinas to save the church by reconciling it with anglo empiricism.

Gods universe is constant. Gods meaning is constant. The means by which man comprehends his meaning changes. The closer to god we evolve, the more in his language we feel, think, and speak, and the less in the language of animals with feel, think, and speak.

The first christians were extremely primitive people – just barely removed from animals – as were the first christian europeans. The greeks less so. The romans less so, the moderns less so. And our generations even less so. We increasingly see the language of god.

But we do not understand its meaning.

Christian man has not abandoned god. he has been taught a false religion of hedonistic pseudoscience instead.

We can blame men. We can blame the church. We can blame the pseudoscientists, and the marxists and the communists, and the postmodernists, and the secularists.

But the truth is, that without an Aquinas to reform the church, it will die.

I think it is better to say that our conquests were made for profit, but our profit was compensation for the cost of dragging mankind out of tyranny, ignorance, poverty, starvation, disease. And that we started with violence, moved to law, moved to commerce, and then to ostracization from or access to, the prosperity we created. We did the best we could. We didn’t often do it well. But will still did it and no other culture did. Or even came close. (Well, technically, it sure looks like Cyrus the Great actually tried. Gotta give Cyrus and the Dariuses their due. They tried. They had engineering. They just didn’t have truth (administration) like the romans did.

IMHO Spencer should stay ON MESSAGE: “Yes we are genetically and culturally different. We built the ancient, and the modern worlds, and you are mere riders on our train. Yes we didn’t do it perfectly, but at least we did it – and you didn’t. It certainly appears you couldn’t. And even today you resist everything about us that made your luxury possible.”

Public Intellectuals Need A Very Small list of messages. The smaller the better. And to stay on message. (I know mine: truth is enough).

I don’t agree with Spencer’s approach since as far as I can tell any tribe can adopt aristocracy and achieve what we have done in a few generations (century or so). At least the Chinese think on that time scale. But that said, don’t shoot yourself by over-reaching.

Knowledge of one domain is not commutable to another.
