Anyway. I understand that you appreciate the work your parents did and your resulting lot in life. And that you are trying to use induction to conflate appreciation with good. I’m just staying on message: The presumption you can ‘improve’ children is false. Just don’t break them.

@Scholars_Stage Well, it’s not an idiotic thing to say in the context of your proposition being that parenting ‘matters’. Well, do you mean you’re thankful? Appreciative? Better off than the alternatives (you don’t know)? Or that you have a competitive advantage?

Again. An artifact of memory, not supported by the data. they satisfied it this way and this is wher eyou are and what you value but you don’t know or can’t imagine all the other permutations that are even better. (“Measure the seen and unseen, b/c all costs are the difference”)

True but doesn’t change the underlying argument that parenting doesn’t much matter. You are your genes. So are your parents.

So the point being your parents supplied the market of your personality (and intellectual) demands with something, but your market of personality demands would have been satisfied one way or the other – as long as not impeded. Because you generate that market.

@Scholars_Stage The data says that you would demonstrate openness to experience and discover opportunities no matter what. So you see what you see, but you don’t what you didn’t. Artifact of human memory. Known and unknown. You value what you’ve done. How do you know you won’t have done better?

And maybe, talking past one another, no effect on WHAT? On genes no, of course. On life outcomes, yes, because costs are costs regardless of one’s characteristics.

@curtdoolittle Not really. No effect all around.

(serious) Help? Trauma seems to produce pretty negative outcomes. Constant Economic assistance seems to produce expected linear improvement. That part I’m sure of. If you mean both are deterministic I’ll buy that.

So to say parenting doesn’t matter is not true, it’s that bad parenting matters a lot, but that if you love and socialize your children they’ll reach their potential. But any attempt to ‘improve on the stock’ is not going to happen – ever. Only the $ assets you give them will.

@Scholars_Stage (I think it’s that bad parenting will make you worse, high investment parenting buys a discount on access to careers, and continuous family investment concentrates wealth over generations, but otherwise, genes determine outcomes, and early variance will dissipate on maturity.)
