The block is, as far as I know used back into pre-history.
Reason is counter-intuitive.
(a) you dont carry a stump somewhere to cut wood on it – that’s for your shop or maybe even indoors (b) they tended to chop wood in place, not have it transported to their homes by flatbed trucks. 😉 (c) if you look at the medieval axes they are for wood hewing less so than splitting. (d) where we cut wood with a saw, then split it with an axe or maul, it’s easier to split wood with wedges then chop it when it’s thin.
I can’t remember where I read this but it was a very long time ago.
