Nike Store. London. Oxford Circus. Terrible staff. Should have videoed her. Acting as if we are privileged to have her attention. The man next to her waiting on three different customers at once. This one, making us queue up and using her little order machine to make sure that no one asked questions, so that she handled as few customers, and as few questions as possible. Starting tomorrow I will video lousy clerks in London shops. I mean, my experience with this country is that ‘work’ is no longer part of the conceptual or behavioral inventory. But at least honestly still is.

It’s amazing how slow service is at some restaurants until you start to walk out without paying. Then all of a sudden it seems like customer service is more important than chit chat. Walked out day before yesterday but left paid bill without tip on the front desk.
Why is it that you have time to chase me for the bill, but not time to come to my table?

Peace is an idiot’s obsession.
The only rational pursuit is the positive expression in property rights of the negative prohibition on free riding. Violence toward that end is always rational and moral. Peace is an undesirable pursuit, since it simply justifies whatever level of immorality is currently extant.
People who pursue peace for its own sake are, if necessity, immoralists.

THREE AXIS OF AESTHETIC CRITICISM:
1) CRAFT (Materials and Workmanship)
2) DESIGN (Aesthetic appeal and ‘beauty’)
3) CONTENT (Values, associations and narrative)
The comparative quality of all art is objectively ascertainable by recursive triangulation.

MEN’S STYLE
It’s official. While the height of men’s fashion was the 1950’s in america, and Ralph Lauren and Gucci tend to perpetuate these ideals, the current heart of men’s fashion is actually GERMANY.
So cool.

THE PROBLEM OF LONDON : MULTICULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS
We are staying at a hotel on the Thames, near London bridge. It’s beautiful.
And it has taken an hour to get coffee and pastries. Now that the tray arrives, it includes two breakfasts that we didn’t order. The Russian delivery man calls the hispanic order taker, and talks to the Turkish cook, and they must speak in pidgin because they cannot really communicate.
I can’t get my freaking morning coffee because the hotel doesn’t consider facility with language a skill.

(Cultural observations: V, like many Ukrainians, is really against the use of drugs, to a degree that an american has trouble understanding the agitation of it. It’s right up there with cheating on your spouse, in the ‘very, very, bad’ department of unforgivable sins. I mean, alcohol is everywhere, but even pot is something that is pretty hard to come across. And honestly, they have it right here. I get it. The problem with alcohol is really just cars. As far as I can tell, pot culture is pacifist but more influential on behavior than alcohol-party culture. I just don’t understand why the crutch is so important in the states — wait. Yes I do. Alienation. Loneliness. The dissolution of the family. That’s why. Ukrainians have real friends and family. Westerners rarely have the same.)
