    Christianity consists of Germanic, Mediterranean, Jewish, Egyptian, and Babylonian ideas. If you were to reduce the western ethic to the jeffersonian bible, and natural law, you would have the germanic elements of it. Indo european aristocracy is what separates the west from the rest. Christianity takes much too much credit for the success of Europe which is as much the product of aristocracy (distributed governance) and its dependence upon trade rather than direct organization of production and heavy taxation, as it was the church. The church was weak, and that was a good thing. It provided literacy, administration, status, and licensed the conquest of unbelievers or violators of the church, in a land where the production of outputs was fairly constant, but the rulership readily changed. It is not the church per se that troubles me, but the use of levantine mysticism instead of aristotelianism and stoicism.

    We mix our philosophers in every civilization:

    – Chinese use Sun Tzu, Confucius, Lao Tzu, and Mao, but call themselves buddhists.

    – Americans use Aristotle; Jesus, Peter and Paul; Smith, Hume, Jefferson, Hamilton and Paine, but call themselves christians.

    Socialists use their false prophets: the marxists, but call themselves atheists and scientific.

    – Germans use Aristotle, Kant…

    – French use their authors …

    – Muslims (judaism 2.0) reduce it to two books …

    It’s hard to dispute the success of Christianity:

    – (a) the church desperately worked to rebuild western civilization after the fall of the empire – even if it played a part in the destruction of western civilization itself.

    – (b) wherever christianity goes today, wealth follows (eventually), because of the extension of kin love and trust to non-kin.

    – (c) christianity somehow imbues us with idealism and this produces great thinkers.

    – (d) the institutionalization of kinship love, the extension of property rights to all and to women and the prohibition on cousin marriage were profound advances.

    I reduce post-medieval ‘scientific’ Christianity to a personal philosophy:

    – sovereignty (non-submission: each man is the master of his fate),

    – do no harm: respect property (property-en-toto), and;

    – chivalry (try to help everyone you possibly can),

    – paternalism (take personal responsibility for the various commons),

    – piety (humility and self skepticism as a defense against hubris; the love of all life; the requirement that we create beauty; and awe at the universe great and small).

    and combine that personal philosophy with a political philosophy:

    – natural law (universal law, necessary for mutual prosperity)

    – strict construction (not hermenuetic interpretation)

    – mono-logism (one logic of ethics, and many contractual adaptations)

    – universalism (if it is indeed true, then it is true for all men)

    In other words, a political philosophy of cooperation.

    And I view all other political models as a failure to solve the problem of politics (cooperation in the production of commons).

    Everything else is merely theatre. Not that theatre is not important. Theater is ritual, and rituals bind. The more expensive the rituals, the greater the binding.

    This vision of Christianity is a vision of the empowered. The vision of Christianity for the unempowered, and for the weak must be different. We can have multiple religions to achieve this, we can tell multiple narratives, or we can create multiple ‘saints’ (gods and heroes) for people with different needs to pray to, that symbolize different ends.

    I prefer:

    – sovereignty to submission;

    – prayer as request for will and wisdom from a hero whose soul (memory) lives on in all of us;

    – seasonal rituals celebrating life on earth rather than lives of prophets

    – worship of life, beauty, joy and friends, to salvation from suffering;

    – many gods for many different people to one god for all;

    – fairies, elves, dwarves, trolls, forests to angels and deserts.

    – the ancient temple to the medieval church;

    because one-ness, monopoly, and authority are cancers for the human mind and spirit.

    I am pretty certain of:

    – Mindfulness:

    – – buddhism for the feminine (defensive control of the impulsive mind)

    – – stoicism for the masculine (offensive discipline in furtherance of action)

    – western myths and fairy tales

    – truth telling as the most important normative commons we can construct.

    – grammar, rhetoric, logic, scientific method (testimonialism), economics, history, as producing higher return in current civilization than our current emphasis on abstract calculation which will soon be replaced by machinery.

    And the trouble in the modern era is:

    – these are masculine prophets and philosophers. Women in each civilization, not only ours, seek to restore the matrilineal order, parasitism and de-civilization, through the newfound power of the state. The only solution I can come up with is to make use of voluntary exchange between classes and to give women a house from which to negotiate those exchanges, rather than empower them through democracy to destroy civilization. Science is reversing a century and a half of feminist and socialist pseudoscience. But it is happening slowly. Whether too slowly is the open question.

    (I am still working on religion. so this is just my current thinking)

    We evolved to fight in formation, using weapons. We are not impulsive. We have pacified much of our impulsive classes out of the gene pool. But we need weapons to fight with. We need to fight in groups. This is the secret to the evolution of western martial capability: technology plus cooperation.

    Watch how fighting has changed due to the introduction of MMA. We pulled kicking from Asia, joints from Asia (low power techniques), wrestling from the west, and boxing from the west(high power techniques).

    Fighting is evolving into little more than striking jaws with roundhouses. Meaning that white people need to carry weapons once again.

    Africans have the most testosterone, are still impulsive, but they get such speed out of it, and they have amazing reach. It’s beautiful to watch them move. Africans are to fighting what white people are to ballet.

    Africans don’t stop when you are down. And they seem to take much greater punishment before going down. More testosterone. They are less afraid of later retaliation?

    Whites and asians do stop when you are down, and take less punishment. The purpose of our peoples is to stop the other. They are more afraid of later retaliation? (HBD Chick: is clannishness involved?)

    Asians are definitely less sexually mature, that is the secret to their longevity. Africans more sexually mature. Human longevity will come from continuing humanity’s long process of extending sexual maturity. It wouldn’t hurt if we could find an appetite suppressant either.

    This is not true of southeast asians, who are just a smaller, lighter, earlier version of man.

    I am not sure how Fukuyama missed it, other than it seems like all throughout his career he seeks to justify his theory of monopoly bureaucracy, and his admiration of Sinic civilization.

    He investigates the problems of bureaucracy under democracy – the failure to develop an independent professional bureaucracy first, and then democracy, such that patronage jobs are not given out.

    But he does not demonstrate that the public intellectual class and private companies would not create problems of the Deep State’s self maximization of self interest, the parasitism of bureaucracy, and the bureaucracy’s attempt to eliminate all competition, and it’s enforced stagnation.

    To create a high trust society one requires (a) a near universal militia (b) private property rights, independent judiciary (‘priesthood’) and rule of law proper (c) a natural nobility with long term interest in the territory, (d) insurers of last resort operated by professionals.

    One does not require a monopoly bureaucracy. It is an admission of the failure of a people to develop and maintain rule of law.

    One requires rule of law, law sufficiently articulated that it is inescapable (decidable), and universal standing such that the people can make use of it to control anyone acting in a public capacity in addition to private capacity.

    If the basis of law is articulated as the total prohibition on free riding in all its forms, including: violence, theft, fraud, free riding, conspiracy, invasion and conquest; and if we defend the informational commons from pollution (“Abusus”), by requiring proof of existence and morality in any claim of common good; and if we construct a market for the construction of commons between the classes; then the end of history is not as Fukuyama claims – the professional bureaucracy.

    Instead, the professional bureaucracy is yet another example of the failure of a people to develop an answer to the problem of politics, ethics, economics and the social sciences.

    Chinese failed first to solve the problem of politics. They created the monopoly state first, and never discovered the rule of law. And in doing so, they failed first.

    The end of history – at least the end of history that we can see today – is the truthful society. And democratic polities of all stripes are yet another failure to construct rule of law applicable to every living soul.

    The author is trying to make a different point, but I want to riff off it to show that firms compete in commodity and non-commodity spaces. And to some degree economists study commodity activity where noise and signal cancel one another out. But that isn’t how companies think about competition, it’s how distributors do.

    I have taught the following means of competition by firms:

    1) Price,

    2) Quantity,

    3) Profitability or Debt

    4) Rents (firms like polities accumulate renters)

    5) Adaptation Costs (innovator’s dilemma).

    6) Geographic Housing Costs (salary costs)

    7) Segmentation (startups start in niches and expand)

    Why? Decreasing production cycles, increasing distribution of production, the increasing importance of TALENT and innovation service industries. vs capital or credit in manufacturing and distribution companies.

    In a highly efficient market, one can sacrifice profits for talent while larger organizations accumulate internal rents. This is most frequently the reason

    Generally speaking, higher profits incentivize more rents. And while prices are sticky, internal rents are much stickier than prices.

    Generally speaking, adaptation costs vary dramatically from industry to industry: service firms trade out people and production firms trade out people and capital. The difference being that GAP regulation and tax policy obscure the tail of fixed vs human capital, largely because we can finance against the illusion of fixed capital value while we cannot finance against the obvious lack of control over human capital.

    ( Recurring nightmare that I’m in a play but cant remember my lines – which in a dream state makes perfect sense – then flows into a rehearsal for a movie with the same scene from the play, and i’m trying to tell the other actor – who is supposedly dying in this scene – that it feels like he’s supporting my weight instead of me his, and it doesn’t make sense, only to have the director tell me that this is the movie set, not the play, and rob lowe plays this character, and what is wrong with me? And unaware that I am dreaming, I think I’ve had a cognitive episode and apologize. Then I realize that I’ve lost my iPhone and credit card, and in a panic I retrace my steps through various shops that I visited in a sequential endless hell of home-depot’s and discount retailers – i don’t like big stores with lots of bad quality merchandise because it overwhelms my ocd reaction to ugliness – in this strange city that I’ve constructed in memory through repeated dreams, merging boston, new york and london with bits of venice, so much so that I can’t distinguish this city from reality. Then as panic increases, I think about my loss of grip on reality, and what that will mean for my business, work, and my friends. And then I start thinking about all the problems losing this iphone and credit card is going to cause me, and I finally wake up. I have a lot of recurring ‘nightmares’ if you can call them that. This ‘city’ is the most recent one of developed. The oldest is from a fear of cellars, basements, caves, tunnels and the fact that in the relative’s funeral homes, there were bodies downstairs and I never really adjusted to that fact. I am afraid these two will eventually merge into a dream world so complete that I can’t leave it. And while awake, I know what caused me to dream each of those things today – understanding that dreams are the product of free association with whatever is accumulated in your memory during the day. And the fact that through recurrence, they increasingly feel real, is disturbing. I mean, I can navigate through that dream city as clearly as I can navigate through a favorite video game level. I have had dreams of video game levels, and I’ve also looked at old video game clips and been horrified how real I remember them to be. The real world, video game worlds and dream worlds, and dreams combining them. When I was younger I seemed to be able to lucidly dream and control my dreams a bit. I’ve lost it. But when I am in some cave deep underground and all of a sudden I realize that there are bodies under the floorboards, I wish I still had it. )

    We went shopping at a new mall last night that wasn’t finished.

    She left her phone upstairs at the restaurant, and I was worried – a lot.

    I took a taxi to a different part of the city with a driver I didn’t trust.

    Met a lot of new people I couldn’t speak with.

    Listened to a brief about a (russian) startup that sounded pseudoscientific.

    Nervous about making a toast and not knowing what to say.

    Thinking about travel costs for the next month.

    I couldn’t seem to keep my phone charged today because the external battery kept coming unplugged.

    I don’t think you’re trying to insult me, I think you’re acting defensively to a categorization of economic inquiry into political or cognitive biases rather than intentions to produce a neutral point of view.

    We all fight different battles. That’s the work of intellectuals.

    Your argument amounts to this: that study of the literature produced in order to determine bias within it, is somehow the same as practicing the investigation itself. And that practicing the art of philosophy (truth telling) is equivalent to the practice of identifying correlations in attempts to explain causes in a particular field.

    This is the same as saying that the study of economic data provides no insight into disparate industries and regions.

    The second error you’re falling into is to assume that the same methods cannot be employed in the service of reproductive, cognitive, political, or group evolutionary strategies from nothing more than selection bias.

    The third error is that economics is one of the fields in which niche knowledge is not generalizable. In other words, the reason for the differences in surveys of economists on any given issue is that only the niche specialists in that issue have sufficient knowledge to respond. Why? because the reason we require economic analysis is that it’s counter-intuitive. So broad surveys of economists are generally less accurate that random polls of the population.

    So it does not matter what methods are employed. It matters that individuals employing those methods possess biases that are expressed in their work, and that their opinions derived from their niche work are not generalizable outside of that niche.

    I have for example, criticized mathematicians on the externalities produced by the false implications of their methods. But a mathematician does not consider externalities born of a verbal contrivance to be his responsibility. I can ask whether you think that is a question of economics or not.

    But a very sophisticated mathematician will tell you the reality: that truth is not a matter for mathematicians – proof is. Truth is a matter for philosophers. Even that man will be uncomfortable with the notion that there exists no ‘mathematical reality’ any more than there exists a heaven, hell, or Camelot. Or that his use of ‘infinities of different sizes’ is nonsense analogy that has had external consequences.

    I am not alone in my categorization of the ongoing battle between the leftists (Krugman/Delong), and the conservatives (Mankiw), and my posting is intended to provide a counter position to Krugman’s ‘dishonesty’ which Mankiw and others tend to point out regularly, and which cost Krugman his job.

    The current debate over “Mathiness” in economics is in fact, caused by the properties I mention above: what are they solving for? This is not a question of innumeracy or error but one of seeking different ends.

    But, academic economics fails to grasp that each field solves for something different by similar means. So it is not that Chicago errs, but that they attempt to define rules. It is not that Saltwaters err but they seek to define discretion that the public and industry find objectionable uses of power, which result in immoral ends. It is not that the politicians do not understand economics. It is that the public will not tolerate immorality. And it is not that the public is wrong to be intolerant of redistribution that produces measurable short and mid term gains at the expense of kith and kin.

    So, either criticize the central argument or state that you cant. That’s the practice of science. 😉

    That argument is that regardless of intentions and methods, the pattern of the research is yet another expression of reproductive strategy of the actor, rather than of a neutral point of view.

    This is an interesting question in the sense that it’s a clear application of the problem of asymmetry of information, understanding, and power, in the control of a utility (a commons).

    In any niche where one has power and influence over others, because of an asymmetry of knowledge of a common resource that the others cannot understand without extraordinary personal investment, and where he possesses power over others’ use of a common resource, we encounter the challenges of:

    (a) Free-riding: pretending to work in exchange for payment, while not providing market-value in return, because one is not subject to competition which would discover and cure one’s free-riding.

    (b) Corruption : seeking favors or privileges by granting favors or privileges.

    (c) Privatization : obtaining personal benefit from a common resource that could be consumed by others.

    (d) Punishment : deliberately punishing individuals and groups by virtue of one’s control over the provision of the common resource.

    (e) Harm : Deliberately causing the failure of individuals or groups by virtue of one’s control over the function of the common resource.

    (f) Functioning As An Agent: allowing one’s self to be used to free ride, engage in corruption, privatization punishment or harm.

    THEREFORE

    Take no personal benefit, give no favors, do no harm, preserve ethical independence from agency, and make decisions at all times by the business value of the work to be performed.

    CHALLENGES

    Political hierarchies exist by in all bureaucracies, whether private or public, which operate independently from market competition, which constantly discovers inefficiencies (corruption).

    While one an usually adhere to (a) thru (e) in one’s job, it is very hard in a bureaucracy not to be pressured into (f) (Agency) in a bureaucracy. In fact, the trading of such favors (corruption) is the currency that forms the economy of bureaucracies that are insulated from the market.

    HISTORICAL INFLUENCES

    In the 20th century, ethical pragmatism (outcome-based ethics) has replaced ethical absolutism (rule-based ethics) due to the constant pressure of left intellectuals’ attack on western high-trust ethics. This has allowed the ethical pragmatism of lower trust polities to spread in western culture. As such it is difficult to operate ethically in private life, commercial life and public life, because such unethical action is beneficial to the individual while harmful to society.

    This is why westerners are the only people to develop high trust societies. It’s very hard.
