The Chinese strategic method is to delay and deceive while avoiding direct conflict until they have obtained an entrenched position and win by default because the cost is too high to reverse.

Now, the western model was – traditionally – to solve problems quickly before the other side could concentrate great forces.

And so the problem with the Chinese strategy is that while it has worked throughout most of their history, it didn’t work against the Japanese, and moreover, it will not work against the west unless the west defacto wants it to.

I love the fact that china is building up the south china sea while the international courts say that they have no claim to it.

Just gives the usa an excuse.

    sigh.

    ( from philpapers)

This question is one of the reasons philosophy departments are increasingly defunded and philosophy is demoted to the status of religious studies.

Why? You can justify your actions to a jury of your peers by arguing that you acted within ethical, moral, legal, norms.

Because you can justify ( sympathetically test ) contractual ( axiomatic or normative or contractual) rules.

You may justify the costs (opportunity, material, risk) of action to yourself or to your peers, or to the nation or even humanity.

But it is the COST that you justify, not the belief. We know this because people do not attempt to justify benefits ( gains ) or washes ( zero cost ) or cost entirely absorbed by the actor.

No belief then is ever justified or justifiable. The greater the cost the more evidence of due diligence we require of ourselves and others.

This is the difference between legal, scriptural, and normative justificationism, the persist of truth via criticism, wherein we require ourselves and others to do due diligence against harm (cost).

This is why philosophy fails to complete the enlightenment transition and to leave its relation to mysticism, Platonism, scripturalism, and justificationism.

There is only one epistemically method available to man: free association -> hypothesis -> theory —> law -> additional parsimony.

And we move from imaginary to law by acts of criticism: survival.

(of course I’m ‘eccentric’. anyone who sacrifices heavily for an intellectual pursuit is odd. it’s not normal to obsess on any topic. So all of us are a bit peculiar. we aren’t models to imitate, we’re resources to learn from. equality is a cancerous idea. specialization creates value we all share – not just in the economy, but in social and intellectual life. It is this diversity of specialization that is useful, whereas normative and legal diversity is costly. The crazy alcoholic uncle unable to catch a wife earned his respect by taking the risks no one else in the family could. Same goes for intellectuals. Genes work within kin groups. Individuals vary widely within. we need crazies all over the place – at least enough to protect the center where the normies breed ever increasingly wonderful generations.)

(dear 88’ers. slavs are ‘whiter’ than we are. It’s just a fact. we’re all more or less ukrainian. we’re more outbred than they are. the rest of the IE are all iranian or indo-iranian, and outbred as hell. The pontic steppe is ukrainian, and was conquered by muscovites. But they spoke ukrainian, not russian. russians – muscovites – are one quarter finn. So lets get this straight: ‘white’ means ukrainian that is not inbred with iranian, indo-iranian, or the other races. And we atlantic, celtic, german, nordic westerners are inbred with three ‘generations’ (waves) of ‘ukrainians’ from the north of the black sea. Plus the original europeans who were not white but did have blue eyes, and the southern europeans who were shepherds, not cattle raiders. Teutons and Nordics and expecially the dutch may be indeed the superior branch of our family. But teh most pure branch of it sits out here on the borderlands. The northern italians are as german as the rest of us, and the souther italians largely greeco/turkic like their greek ancestors. And the upper class of yamnayans that ruled greece are all but bred out. Which is our fate: we domesticate and die for it.)
