Happiness is redundant to grown men — conviction and love (a relational condition) are more important because those are instruments for us to continually invest our agency in the best way possible from a survival/reproduction perspective regardless if we’re happy or not.

(DIARY: Health update. Seems that I’ve made incremental progress again over the last month. Blood pressure, heart rate, and levels are all pretty much back to normal. Although I need to start working on strength now. And while I’m up to 192 lbs, I feel good for the first time in a year or two. I also feel I can enter the ‘flow’ more easily. I’m getting better free association results. And am getting bouts of energy and hints of interest in moving the business side as well as the philosophy side of my life. So while I am not fit and ready yet, I’m still getting better. Now, I actually don’t know how long it has taken me to recover from burnout and illness before. It’s hard to remember. I know that in 2012 it took me the better part of 18 months. I have no idea how long cancer in 2002 took. Since I stayed with it until 09 I can’t claim I ever recovered from it. And I know that in 97, after the sale of RedTech and that european flu that cost me 30lbs (and killed 200 people over there), it took more than a year and a half. I don’t think I had time to recover between divorce/cancer in 08/09 and 2011/2012. And my memory is too sketchy about the previous deals and illnesses before then. But I am not sure that I had any material illness and recovery problems before ’97. Normal life ups and downs. But nothing of that scale other than that damned ’77 Russian Flu (pandemic).)

–“Ukraine’s National Police have arrested several suspects who were illegally producing bitcoins at a recreation center of a Ukrainian state institute, according to newly released court documents.

Police found that 200 computers had been set up in an unused swimming pool at the Paton Electric Welding Institute’s recreation center to generate bitcoins, the world’s most popular digital money.

The investigation became public on Aug. 8 after Kyiv’s Sviatoshinsky District Court published a court decision in the state register of court rulings. In it, the court claims the production of the bitcoins was being carried out illegally, violating several Ukrainian laws.

Police tracked down the allegedly illegal bitcoin producer with the help of an SBU security service agent, who “found out the exact location of illegal hardware that was secretly generating digital money, which was later used via payment systems that are unauthorized in Ukraine.”

The court claims the suspects had no rights to use the state premises – a swimming pool. They also breached the Law on the National Bank of Ukraine by emitting “substitute money” and forging documents to launder it. Under the law, only the central bank can issue currency in Ukraine.

According to the Law on the National Bank, there is only one national currency, the hryvnia, and no other currency or substitute currency can be issued or used as a form of payment in Ukraine. The law does not specify what a “substitute currency” is, however.

Neither are there any laws in Ukraine that regulate virtual currencies. The National Bank of Ukraine, however, has frowned at cryptocurrencies, dubbing them “a substitute for real money.”

Nevertheless, as there is no official restriction on the use of cryptocurrencies, some Ukrainian companies now accept bitcoins as payment.

The value of one bitcoin today is $3,300 (Hr 85,000).”—

Kiev is more interesting. Most jobs. Most activity. Very big sprawling city mixing old austro-hungarian-polish with soviet (ugh) concrete apartments. Everyone speaks both russian and ukrainian. More often russian. Most shops have people who speak english.

Lviv is cheaper and has more ‘touristy’ feel. More tech. More Polish-Austrian. “Cultural” center of the country. Family life is good here. Not sure it’s as good for ‘singles’ so to speak. (I prefer lviv – it’s very relaxed. Calm. Old european city. very old fashioned people. And all I need to be happy are tourist areas to write and people watch. I haven’t found that elsewhere in ukraine.

Kharkiv. Very cheap. Some tech. Russified.

Dnipropetrovsk … Some Tech. Russified. ( well, 10’s grow on trees. Seriously. It’s worth it just for the scenery.)

Odessa. Good shopping. Black Sea Climate (Too hot in summer for me). Lots of black market activity (cars etc). Good for music, fashion, partying. Russified.

I found apartments overpriced but everything else dirt cheap. And I just loved the entire experience of a civil rather than politcal public discourse.Michael ChurchillPointless comment here, but I love the art museum in Odessa. They have a bunch of Ayvazovsky’s. Absolutely fabulous nautical painter. I didn’t put two and two together until later … but I stayed at the Ayvazovsky hotel as well.
